“And since I let you have the avocado, you invited me to dinner.”

“Perfect. Now we have a standing Taco Tuesday date. Unless you have an event, of course.”

“Ooh, I like it.”

“How long have we been dating?” Spence asks.

I nibble at my cuticle, wondering how much of my sad dating history I should spill here. I don’t want his pity, but he is going to be face-to-face with my ex tomorrow.

“We can’t have been together too long. My ex and I broke up about two months ago.”

“Lucky for me,” he says without skipping a beat, and my chest lightens, tension seeping out of my body.

“Thanks.”

“No, seriously. His loss, my gain.”

“It gets better—” I say, gnawing my bottom lip.

“Bring it on.”

“He’s the best man in the wedding. Also, the groom’s business partner and closest friend.”

“Perfect. Can’t wait to meet him.”

I love this guy’s attitude.I haven’t felt this happy in a long time—even when I was dating Bentley, to be honest.

“Fair warning—Bentley’s a real asshole. He’s a dentist and cheated on me with one of the hygienists at the office.”

“Classy.”

“I know. I’d love to avoid him, if at all possible.”

“Got it. Any other notable people I should know?” Spence asks, zero hesitation in his voice.

“You’ve already had the pleasure of meeting my cousin Charity, the bride-to-be, and her mother, Aunt Edna. Uncle Charles, father-of-the-bride will also be there. My mom and dad aren’t coming. They traveled for the last wedding and have a one wedding rule, apparently.”

“Where do your parents live? And do you have siblings?”

“They’re retired now and live down in Seaglass Beach, Florida. I have an older sister, but she lives on the West coast. Out in California.”

“Nice. Some good golf courses out there.”

“So I’ve heard. Is it a dealbreaker if I don’t play golf?” I ask, my heart pounding harder than it should as I wait for his answer.

“No. I can always teach you, if you want to learn. Or you can drive the golf cart.”

I laugh. “Super. What about your family? Brothers and sisters?”

“My family lives here—my mom, dad, and a younger brother, Clayton. Clay works with my dad at his accounting firm. But he’s running the business side of things. They tried to get me to join the team as an accountant, but it’s not my scene.”

“No? Why not?”

“I like being outside, moving around and working with people. I interned for my dad one summer and quit several times.”

I giggle. “He made you finish the summer, though, didn’t he?”

“You know it.”
