“I am, but I’ll come with you.”

“Are you sure? I’ll be quick, then I can be a regular wedding guest, swear.”

“Positive. I’d rather work back in the kitchen with you than be a guest at the wedding with everyone else.”

Madison freezes, her eyes misting up, and I’m worried I misspoke.

“Sorry, did I say something wrong? Was that the wrong answer?”

She shakes her head side to side. “No. It was the perfect answer.”

Leaning forward, she presses her lips softly to mine and my breath hitches in my chest. She tastes just as sweet as I thought she would, like vanilla icing and desire. After a few seconds, I break away. Not because I want to, but because I have to—or we’re never getting out of this chapel.

I smooth my thumb over her cheek, her lips tipping up into a smile. “C’mon, let’s go check on the reception so I can get a chance to spin you around the dance floor.”

MADISON LEIGH

I can barely focuson the reception checklist, my heart’s banging around so hard in my chest.

Spence kissed me, right there in the chapel, in front of everyone—Aunt Edna, Charity, the bridal party.

Bentley.

I mean, I know we’re supposed to be dating so kissing me is a perfectly natural thing to do.

But still. The moment between us felt so intimate, so perfect.

So right.

Calm down, Madison. It was a kiss, not a freaking marriage proposal. You’ve clearly been watching too many rom-coms.

“The specialty napkins are being passed with the hors d’oeuvres, right?” I double-tap the phone screen, ticking down the to-do list.

“Yep.” Jolie nods, peering over my shoulder at the never-ending list. “Along with the champagne. And extra napkins are at the bar. Danny has the specialty cocktails ready to go and an attendant’s supervising the gift table. The slide show is set to roll during dinner and the band has the requested song list. Everything’s perfect and we’re all good here. Go?—”

She nudges my shoulder, pushing me toward Spence. “Enjoy your date.” Then, dropping her voice, she whispers, “He’s hot.”

My face flames as she waggles her eyebrows at me.

“Fine.” I smooth my hair over my shoulder. “But if there’s an issue—anything at all—come get me.”

“Will do, boss.” Jolie grins, then dashes away toward the kitchen.

A half-second later, Spence slides into her space, extending a glass of champagne to me.

“I assume you’re a regular wedding guest now.”

I nod, accepting the golden bubbly. Clinking his glass to mine, he holds my gaze, sending a ripple of pleasure zipping through me.

“Cheers.”

We both take a sip, and suddenly I’m nervous, all my muscles jumpy. Like this is a real date.

Spence steps in closer to me, our arms brushing, and I catch the faint, clean scent of laundry detergent. The first notes of the band float across the ballroom as guests begin to fill the space, the low hum of small talk blending with the music.

“Everything looks great in here. Did you pull all this together yourself?” He trains his deep blue eyes on me and I can hardly concentrate, what with the champagne and the gorgeous guy standing in front of me.
