Most Annoying Bro Ever: I thought maybe your new GF was over

Spence: No, I’m cooking dinner. And I told you—she’s not my GF

Most Annoying Bro Ever: Might want to tell Mom that before she posts it on Facebaby

Spence: Shit. I knew I shouldn’t have said anything

Most Annoying Bro Ever: She prob already called Aunt Jean

Spence: Dude. It’s not like I’ve been single that long

Most Annoying Bro Ever: It’s been a year

Spence: Didn’t know you were tracking my relationships

Most Annoying Bro Ever: It’s pretty easy when there aren’t any

Spence: Ouch. Low blow. On that note…ttyl

Most Annoying Bro Ever: See you Sun.

Most Annoying Bro Ever: And try to catch the garter. It will make Mom so happy

I send him the middle finger emoji before flinging my phone on the counter, still marveling at the speed with which the news of my wedding date traveled. I shouldn’t have told my mom about the date—now her hopes will be sky-high. She’ll probably start browsing baby naming sites.

In the moment, pretending to be Madison Leigh’s date felt easy, right. Now I’m not so certain. This whole situation could backfire.

I haven’t had great luck in the relationship department, despite my bravado back at the bar. And Clayton was being generous. My last girlfriend was over a year ago, and I’m just now getting my mojo back after Jenna tromped all over my balls. I was never good enough for her—and she loved reminding me of that any chance she got. The best thing she ever did for me was dump me, TBH.

But Madison Leigh doesn’t seem the social-climbing type. And it’s only one date. Worst case, I get a free dinner and dessert out of the deal. Best case, I score another date with a beautiful woman.

Besides, I’ve never been one to lay up—on the golf course or in life—and I’m not about to start now.

MADISON LEIGH

I stare downat the note lying on the counter. Spence specifically mentions calling him, so I guess I shouldn’t take the easy way out and text. Besides, I should probably know a few things about him before the wedding tomorrow. Like how long we’ve been dating…

Taking a quick sip of pinot, I punch in his number before my feet get any colder.

“Hello?”

“Hey. It’s Madison Leigh. From the club.”

“Hi.”

I smile at my empty living room, tucking my legs up beneath me on the couch. “Hi.”

“How’d the rest of the Bridal Brunch go?”

“It went well. I mean, no tequila shots were taken and no major arguments broke out amongst the bridesmaids, so I’m calling it a win.”

Spence chuckles, a low, sexy rumble that sends heat straight to my belly.

Before I get further entangled here, I spill my guts. “It was sweet of you to volunteer to be my plus-one?—”

“I’m sensing a ‘but’ here…”
