“What are we going to do?”

Brett removed his cellphone from his pocket, scrolled through it, and put it to his ear.

“Nevada, we need your help,” Brett said, and JoJo breathed a sigh of relief.

She listened as Brett explained to Nevada what was happening, then he disconnected.

“He said he’ll be right here.” Brett stuck the phone back into his pocket.

“Thank God.”

As they sat there waiting, JoJo couldn’t stop shaking. Brett pulled her across the seat and held her.

A few minutes passed when she saw the red and blue lights passing the driveway where they sat. Brett started the truck, backed out, and flashed his lights when they saw Nevada driving slowly along the road ahead.

JoJo saw the brake lights, and Brett drove to where Nevada sat on the berm and stopped behind him. She watched Nevada step out of his SUV cruiser and walk back to them. Brett lowered the window.

“I haven’t seen anyone else on the road, but he could have seen me. I didn’t run the lights until I looked for you, but if he was on a side road, he could have watched me drive past. Let’s get you home. I’ll follow you.”

Brett nodded, and JoJo watched Nevada enter his vehicle. Then they drove to Brett’s house, with Nevada following. She kept glancing in the side mirror, but only saw the lights of Nevada’s SUV. Damn Rich for scaring her.

She reached across the seat and grasped Brett’s hand. He squeezed it.

“Are you okay?”

“No. He’s terrifying me.”

“It won’t be long before we leave for Helena. At least we’ll be away from him.”

“I can’t wait.”

“Hey, how about going to get our trees?”

“I’d like that. When do you want to do that?”

“Tomorrow? I heard there’s a Christmas tree farm in Clifton.”

“Richards. Nick has had it for years. He has beautiful trees.”

“Yeah, that was the name. We can do that.”

“Okay, but I don’t think I’ll get one. I plan on being with you over the holidays.”

“Whatever you want, darlin’.”

“I want to be with you, Brett. I can’t see getting two trees if I’m not going to be there.”

“Makes sense.”

Once they reached Brett’s house, he parked beside the porch and Nevada pulled in behind them, then walked toward them.

“Any idea who this is?”

JoJo glanced at Brett, then at Nevada, and nodded.

“I think it’s Richard Stafford. My ex-boyfriend. I have the tag number.”

Nevada’s eyebrows rose. “Good thinking. I’ll take it if you don’t mind.”
