“No. He’ll be fine. I didn’t shoot to kill.” Sam stood and holstered his weapon. “Are you hit, Nevada?”

“No, he missed me.”

Sam looked at JoJo. “Are you okay, JoJo?”

“Yes…” she murmured, and her knees gave out.

Brett held her, but lowered her to the ground. He squatted and took her in his arms.

“JoJo? Baby?”

She stirred, opened her eyes, and looked at him.

“I’m okay. I’ve never fainted in my life.”

“I’m so sorry, darlin’.”

“It’s not your fault. Help me up.”

Brett helped her back into the truck and walked to Sam, who stood over Stafford.

“What happens now?”

“He’ll go to the hospital, then jail. Stalking is one thing, but he shot at a deputy. He’s going away for a long time.”

“Thank God.”

“You’ll both have to come into the office and complete a report, but he’s not going anywhere.” Sam squatted down. “I see you’re awake. You’re under arrest.”

Brett listened as Sam read Stafford his rights. The ambulance arrived, loaded Stafford, and took him to the hospital, with Sam following.

“Do you need a tow truck?” Nevada asked.

“Yes, please.”

Nevada nodded, used his cellphone, and called a tow for them.

“You don’t have to stick around, Nevada.”

“I’ll make sure traffic stays back, although not much traffic here tonight.”

“I appreciate it. I’m sure I just need to be towed out of the ditch. I don’t think there’s any damage.”

“Good. Chuck should be here soon.”

“I’m going to get in the truck with JoJo. Thanks, Nevada.” He shook his hand and then got into the Tahoe.

JoJo climbed over the console and hugged him as soon as he entered the truck.

“I’m so sorry, baby.”

“Brett, it’s nothing you did.”

“I pushed him.”

“He needed to be pushed… off a cliff.”

Brett laughed. “That is the truth.”
