“Let’s see how well you follow.” He grinned, kneed the horse, and took off in a flash.

JoJo laughed as she watched him ride off. The man could ride for sure. He barely moved in the saddle. With a sigh, she kneed Cinder and ran after him.

Chapter Five

When Brett rode up to the pond, he dismounted and watched JoJo rein her horse to a halt, then dismount. He grinned when she swung her leg over the horse’s head and jumped down. Exactly as he’d done, he moved through the grass toward her.

“I was hoping to help you down.”

“Next time.” JoJo glanced around and then back at him. “It’s so pretty here.”

“Montana does not lack in beauty.” He stared into her eyes and watched a blush move across her cheeks.

They removed the saddles to let the horses graze. Brett pulled a blanket from the saddlebag, snapped it out, then removed the food from the saddlebag.

“I’m starving,” he said. “Come sit, JoJo.”

“All right.” She sat on the blanket, removed her hat, patted the spot beside her, and leaned back on her hands.

Brett sat, lay back, removed his hat, and placed it over his face.

“I thought you were hungry, or are you expecting me to feed you?”

He grinned. “I am more than capable of feeding myself. I wanted to relax for a few minutes.” He removed his hat, sat up, and looked at her. “Are you hungry?”

“I am. I skipped breakfast.”

“I had breakfast around five.”

“I was snuggled under my blankets.”

Brett leaned over and kissed her lips.

“I wouldn’t mind being under those blankets with you.” He shook his head. “I’m sorry, that was uncalled for.”

“It’s all right.” JoJo stared into his eyes.

“No, it’s not. We don’t know each other very well, but I want to. And I don’t want to scare you off by saying things like that. I won’t lie; I want you, JoJo, but we’ll take it slow. If I say something inappropriate, slap me upside the head.”

She nodded. “Not a problem.”

“Damn. I’ll try to be on my best behavior. At least until we know each other better.” He winked.

JoJo smiled. “Me too.”

Brett groaned, and she laughed. He liked her and was curious to see how it would go. He hadn’t been looking to get involved yet, but he entered Sloane’s bakery for a reason: to meet JoJo. He believed things happened for a reason.

After they finished eating, Brett got to his feet, put the trash in the saddlebags, and took the fishing poles out of another one. He put them together, handed her one, then got the tackle box out.

He squatted, opened the box, removed a silver spinner, and attached it. He watched as she looked through the chest, got a stick jig out, and hooked it to the line. She chose a blue one that resembled a minnow.

She stood, walked to the pond, and cast out in great form. He shook his head. Diane wouldn’t even touch a fishing pole.

He straightened up, headed for the pond, but on the opposite side of her, and cast out. His spinner hit the middle of the pond. He reeled it in slowly so it would stay close to the bottom. Brett watched as JoJo sat in the grass and reeled in the line.

“I didn’t have time to get worms,” he said.

“Next time.”
