“I’m no slouch on the dance floor.” Brett raised his mug of beer at her.

“You certainly aren’t. Maybe you shouldn’t have told me that because I won’t let you sit one out.” She smiled when Brett chuckled.

A while later, JoJo grinned when she saw Nevada and Courtney pushing through the crowd. She raised her arm and saw Courtney point in her direction.

“Courtney and Nevada are here,” she said, close to Brett’s ear.

He glanced over his shoulder, grinned, and got to his feet. He shook hands with Nevada and said hi to Courtney.

“Maybe we should take that table.” Brett inclined his head toward an empty table. JoJo nodded, and they walked to the table and took their seats.

Nevada and Brett got along great. They talked about everything and anything. And she and Courtney had been friends since working at the bakery together. As the night went on, JoJo laughed so hard her cheeks hurt.

JoJo was having the best time and wondered what the night had in store once they left Dewey’s.

At midnight, Brett decided it was time to go. Nevada agreed and took Courtney’s hand and led her through the crowd. Brett held JoJo’s hand as they left the bar and headed out behind them.

Outside, they agreed to get together again, and went their separate ways. He led JoJo to his truck and opened the door for her, strode around the front, and climbed into the cab. He inserted the key, but he looked at her instead of starting the vehicle.

JoJo looked at him, and their eyes held. It was dark inside the truck’s cab, but he could see in her eyes she wanted him as much as he wanted her.

“Will you come home with me?” he asked and held his breath.

“Yes.”

Brett nodded, started the truck, and drove them to his place.

He wrapped his hands around the steering wheel and tried to keep his thoughts on anything but her. If she told him to take her home, that’s precisely what he would have done. He’d be hard all damn night, but since seeing her, that’s how his nights were, anyway.

They didn’t speak. He figured she was as lost in thought about this. He wanted it to be perfect. Nice and slow so he could go over every inch of her. Damn it.Down, boy! Now is not the time nor the place.

When he drove into his driveway, he glanced at her to see her looking at him.

“Stop it,” he growled.

JoJo laughed. “I’m not doing anything.”

Brett slammed on the brakes, put the gear into Park, and looked over at her.

“The hell you’re not. If you don’t want me to embarrass myself… behave.” He shook his head when she batted her eyelashes at him, then chuckled.

After giving her one more look, he drove the Tahoe close to the porch and parked. When JoJo touched his arm, he jerked.

“Are you okay?”

“I am. JoJo, if you want to change your mind—”

“I don’t. Do you?”

“No, ma’am.”

With a heavy sigh, he opened the door and walked to the front of the vehicle to see JoJo. He took her hand, led her up the steps, and into the house. He shoved the door closed, removed his hat, and hung it on a peg.

When he turned to look at her, he couldn’t help but stare. She was beautiful, and he wanted her like no other. That surprised him. For years it had been Diane, and no other woman mattered, but she cut him to the core. He lost the respect and love he had for her. But even before that, he thought there would never be another woman in his life, but now, he was thinking differently.

She clasped her hands before her and stared right back at him. He stepped forward, giving her time to let him know if she didn’t want this. Another step and another. Then she moved forward to meet him. He stared into her eyes, glanced down at her lips, and had to taste them. He needed those lips under his. He grasped her arms and pulled her close, then removed the band holding her hair and raked his fingers through the silky strands.
