“I figured as much.” Brett grinned. “Why does your family have dark hair, but you have blonde?”

JoJo laughed. “My grandmother on my mother’s side was blonde, or as Dad teases, the milkman is my father.”

Brett laughed. “I like your family. Well, your mom and dad. I’m not sure about Liam yet.”

“He’s a great guy.”

“He’s a good bit older than you, right?”

“Seven years. We had a sister between us, but Kelly died in a car accident a few years ago. She’d be thirty now.”

“You never told me that.”

“I’m sorry.”

“No worries, baby. I’m sorry about your sister, though.”

“Thank you. Liam works his ass off on this ranch. He’s run it for ten years. Dad had a heart attack, and the doctor told him the stress of running the ranch would kill him if he didn’t let someone else run things. Liam took over.”

“Does he live with your parents?”

JoJo laughed. “No. He built a home about a mile from the main house. He and Dad would kill each other.”

Brett chuckled. “I get that. I’m sure we’ll get along once we get to know each other.”

They returned to the house and decided it was time to leave. As they walked outside, Brett held the truck door for her until she got inside. He walked around the front, but stopped when he heard his name and saw Liam approaching him.Shit. Here we go.

Brett folded his arms, leaned against the truck’s grill, and waited. Liam stopped a few feet from him and stuck his hands into the pockets of his jeans. He glanced at JoJo inside the vehicle and then at Brett.

“JoJo is my baby sister, and I’d appreciate it if you didn’t hurt her. I’d hate to kick your ass.”

Brett grinned. “I get it. I have a younger sister. I didn’t lie to your dad. I would never want to hurt her or make her want to leave me.”

Liam nodded. “Good. Just so we’re on the same page here.”

“We are.”

“It was nice meeting you, Brett. Don’t make me regret it.”

“I won’t.” Brett stuck his hand out to him, and Liam shook it, then turned and walked back inside the house. Brett climbed into the truck.

“He warned you, didn’t he?”

“Yes,” Brett muttered, but laughed when JoJo did.

When Brett drove her home later, he hated leaving her at her door and going home alone. They had dinner together on Friday nights, but he’d take her home afterward. They could be together only over the weekends, unless they went to dinner, but he still took her home afterward since she had to work. Being Sunday, she had to work tomorrow.

After dropping her off, he drove home. He always wanted her with him, but didn’t want to pressure her. He knew she had feelings for him. Otherwise, she didn’t seem the type to see a man just for sex.

“She told you she was crazy about you, too,” he muttered as he pulled into his driveway. He had a long night ahead of him. Hell, a long week until he could have her in his bed again.

Taking a deep breath, he released it, opened the door, entered the house, and headed straight to bed.

Summer turned to fall, and cooler weather moved into the little towns. JoJo stood at the case in the bakery and waited on a customer. She glanced toward the window to see it was dark outside.

“Here you go,” she smiled and handed them a bag and a copy of the receipt.
