Alex told him about the case and Beau nodded.

“Sounds like something’s up with her ex. Why else would he lie about where he was?”

“That’s what I’m thinking.”

“Well, good luck with it.” Beau nodded, walked to his desk, and sat.

Beau had been an MDOL agent longer than he’d been. Since they worked together out of the office in Clifton, they had worked on several cases together. He was a damn good agent and Alex trusted him with his life. Beau’s brother, Luke, was also an agent.

He glanced around the room. There wasn’t an agent here he didn’t trust. He knew they had his back and he had theirs. No questions asked.

As he got to his feet, his cellphone vibrated, and he removed it from the pocket of his T-shirt to see Dylan Walters number.

“Ms. Walters, what can I do for you?”

“Travis called me.”

“What did he want?” Alex resumed his seat.

“He told me he wants to see Zoey. Of course, I told him he couldn’t, and he’s not happy.”

“You didn’t mention him not being in Missouri, did you?”

“I’m not stupid, Agent Reeves.”

“Yes, ma’am. I apologize.”

“It's okay. I know I shouldn't tell him that I am aware of his lies.”

“I was going to go to Whitefish, but I’m not sure what good it would do. If he wants to see your daughter, I’m sure he’ll be in Clifton soon.”

“I don’t want him near my daughter,” she whispered. “He knows he has no rights to her.”

“I understand. The minute he’s in Clifton, I’ll make a visit to him.”

“I appreciate it. Anything on my bull?”

Alex pinched the bridge of his nose. This woman was nothing if not tenacious.

“Not yet—”

“Agent Reeves, I need that bull.”

“And I’ve told you, the odds of getting him back are slim. I’m doing what I can,” he growled, then he sighed. “I’m sorry. I didn’t mean to snap. It’s just not as easy as people think it is. Most of the livestock stolen is never recovered.”

Her sigh came across the line.

“I know. I’m hoping for a good outcome.”

“Hope for the best, plan for the worst. That’s the best advice I can give you.”

“That makes me feel so much better,” she said with sarcasm.

“Ma’am, I’m doing my job, and I’m damn good at it. I’ll call you when I know something, but you let me know if you hear from Martin again.”

“Yes, sir,” she snapped and disconnected.

Alex huffed. Damn, what a hardhead, but he knew she had every right to be pissed about her bull. Those animals were worth a lot of money, and with just one missing, she was losing money.
