“Why do they even do it, is my question,” Peyton said.

“Historicallyhigh cattle prices provide more incentive for cattle theft. Thieves get a bigger payoff for their efforts.”

“I know times are tough, but to steal a person’s livelihood?” Dylan sighed. “Please be careful.” She gazed into those dark eyes until someone cleared their throat, and she glanced away from him.

“Uh, yes, ma’am. I’ll talk to you tomorrow.” He looked at Marlowe and Peyton. “Goodnight.”

When he walked out the door, Dylan closed it, turned, leaned against it, and folded her arms, as she stared at her friends. Peyton looked like a fish out of water.

“You said he was gorgeous. He’s not gorgeous. He’s…” Peyton waved her hand around. “What is more than gorgeous? That man is fucking hot.”

“I was going to say, devastatingly handsome. Like how most women describe Trick Dillon.” Marlowe laughed.

“Oooh, that sums it up perfectly,” Dylan said, laughing. “I told you.”

“Oh, my God, Dylan. If you do not get that man in bed, I will disown you.” Peyton folded her arms across her chest.

“I can’t—”

“Why the hell not?”

“He’s on a case.”

“Well, tell him to finish it up, so you can take him to bed.”

“I agree with Peyton. Get him in bed.”

“Hecanfill out a pair of jeans,” Peyton said with a sigh.

“Most cowboys can.” Marlowe smiled. “I love how Hank fills his out.”

“You should go keep him company, Dylan.” Peyton grinned.

“I can’t. Zoey is here.”

“We’ll watch her,” Peyton said.

“No! Get that out of your head, Peyton.”

“Dylan, when this is over, go after him.”

“He might have a girlfriend,” Marlowe said.

“No, he said he wasn’t involved with anyone.”

“Then you are wasting a perfect opportunity.”

Dylan thought about it, but then shook her head.

“I can’t distract him from the case. I want him to find my bull.”

“And if he doesn’t? Then what, Dylan?” Peyton asked her.

“I don’t know. You have no idea how pissed it makes me that someone thought it was all right to steal from me. That is my bull. Who does that?”

“It’s people who couldn’t care less about anyone but themselves and what they can get out of something.” Marlowe sighed. “I’d better get going.”

“Yeah, me too.” Peyton walked to the pegs by the door, removed her jacket and pulled it on, and Marlowe did the same.
