He entered the room, carrying a tray and set it on the coffee table, then he handed Dylan a cup.

“Zoey, come get your cocoa, baby.”

“I want to play with Peaches, Mama.”

“Peaches isn’t going anywhere, so come drink this, then we’ll go.”

“I don’t want to go yet. I want to play with Peaches.”

“Oh, boy,” Alex muttered.

“She will push.”

“Of course, she will. She’s a female.”

Dylan laughed. “That’s true.”

“You can stay as long as you like, Dylan. In fact, if the roads are bad, you can spend the night. I have a spare room.”

“I have to get back to the ranch. We’ll go once we finish our drinks. Zoey,” Dylan snapped. “Drink your cocoa.”

Zoey sighed, walked to the coffee table, picked up her cup, and sipped from it, then she looked at Dylan with a frown, making Alex laugh.

“Yeah, definitely female. Even at that age, she knows that look.”

“Every woman is born with it. We perfect it over the years.”

“No shit.”

“Alex!” Zoey said.

“Busted,” Dylan said, throwing his word back at him.

“I apologize, Zoey.”

“It’s okay… this time.”

“Man, she’s tough.”

“She’s had to be. Just like me. We’re on our own, but we’re making it.”

“Of course, you are. You run a successful breeding ranch. You did an excellent job taking over from your father, Dylan. He’d be proud.”

She blinked tears from her eyes.

“I hope so. He wouldn’t be proud about Toga though.”

“I told you; it happens. Your dad knew the risks. Every rancher and farmer know what they’re up against.” He touched her hair. “Trust me, he knows you’re doing your best.”

Dylan looked at him, and their eyes met. He wanted to kiss her so bad, he could taste it, but he cleared his throat and stepped back.

“We’ll, uh, finish our drinks then go, since you aren’t going to tell me anything.”

“I don’t have enough to tell you yet. I will after I make some calls.”

“All right. I trust you.”

“Really? You trust me, huh? Even though I’m a cowboy.” He shook his head.
