“What is it, baby?” Dylan didn’t take her eyes off Alex.

“Do you like Alex?”

Dylan wrinkled her forehead and tried not to grin when she saw Alex frown at her.

“I think I do. Is that okay?”

“Yep. I’m going to play with Peaches. You can kiss Alex.” Zoey ran over to the dog.

“Did you hear that? You can kiss Alex.” Alex grinned, and lowered his head, but when Zoey screamed, they jumped apart and turned to see her staring at a large aquarium.

“Look at the fish, Mama,” she exclaimed.

“I didn’t even notice that.” Dylan walked toward the aquarium, stopped, and watched the fish. She glanced over her shoulder. “This is beautiful, Alex. It’s saltwater, isn’t it?”

“Yes. It’s a sixty-five-gallon tank.”

“It’s so pretty.” Dylan wrapped her fingers around Zoey’s wrist when she tapped on the glass. “Please don’t do that, baby. The fish don’t like it. It’s too loud and scares them.”

“Oh, ‘kay, Mama. I won’t do it again.”

“I bet it’s relaxing just to watch them swim around.”

“That’s why I got it.”

Dylan frowned. “You got it for that reason?”

“Yes.”

“You’re not going to say more, are you?”

Alex glanced at Zoey and back at her then shook his head.

“Will you tell me sometime?”

“Yes.”

“Okay. Zoey, honey, we’d better go before the snow gets worse. If it’s all right with Alex, we’ll visit again so you can play with Peaches.”

Zoey ran to Alex and looked at him.

“Can I come back and play with Peaches?”

Dylan watched Alex squat down and smile at Zoey.

“Of course, you can. You’re welcome anytime.” He looked at Dylan. “Both of you.”

She smiled. “We’d like that. Come on, baby, let’s get our coats.”

“’Kay, Mama.” Zoey hugged Peaches again then walked to the kitchen with Dylan following.

In the kitchen, Alex walked to the door, looked out, then shook his head.

“I’m not sure you’re going anywhere. I knew we were expecting snow, but not this much this fast.” He opened the door and stepped onto the porch.

Dylan frowned, walked to the door, gazed out and gasped.

“Oh, my God! It was just starting to lay. We haven’t been here that long.”
