“You know, somehow, I don’t think that’s true.”

“Dad, it’s just hard seeing you with one of my teachers. Even though it was years ago. All I see when I look at her, is her standing at the blackboard, getting angry because someone didn’t understand something.” Alex shook his head.

“I get that, but we’re just dating. It’s not like we’re getting married.”

“You never know.”

“I do. I like her, but it’s not serious and it won’t be. We’re having fun.”

“Fun? Is that what you call it now?”

“Maybe if you had some fun, you’d understand.”

“I have fun,” Alex snapped.

“Really? Because you’re awfully angry for someone having… fun.”

Alex shook his head. There was no way he’d tell his dad about Dylan. He’d chew him a new one. His father knew as well as he did, that it was wrong to get involved with anyone while on the job. It was best to keep that to himself. He didn’t need to hear his father telling him the same thing he’d been telling himself. But he also knew how his father could get blood from a turnip.

As they sat in the restaurant, Alex glanced around to see the place packed as usual, then he looked at his father.

“So, you and Mrs. Crane…”

“I thought you said it didn’t bother you?”

“I know it shouldn’t, but it’s a little hard to forget she was my teacher.” Alex shook his head. “Never mind. It’s none of my business.”

“Thelma and I went into this with our eyes open. Neither of us are interested in a long-term relationship.” Brooks shrugged. “I still miss your mother, so if I ever fall in love again, she will have to be a special woman."

Alex nodded, as he pushed his food around on his plate.

“What’s going on with you, Alex?”

“Nothing, Dad. Why?”

Brooks shook his head. “I know you too well, and something… or someone is on your mind.”

Alex sighed, picked up his glass of water, and took a sip. He set the glass down, cleared his throat, looked at his father, and shrugged.

“It’s a woman,” he muttered. When his father didn’t respond, he looked at him to see him staring at him, then he laughed. “It’s not funny.”

“Oh, but it is. I’ve been waiting for this to happen since your divorce. Sheila wasn’t the woman for you. She was too selfish. She wanted everything her way or no way.”

“I know that now, Dad, but this… this is complicated.”

“Why? Is she married? Because if she is, you’d better get the hell away from her.”

“She’s not married, Dad. She’s divorced, but…”

“But what?”

Alex shifted in his chair. He knew how this was going to go down.

“I’m working on her case.”

“Excuse me? Hercase? Are you telling me she’s a victim of rustling?”

“Uh, yes, sir.”
