“I’m not sure where to start.”

“The beginning is always good.” She frowned at him.

Alex took a deep breath, blew it out, took her hand in his, and gazed into her eyes.

“I think it’s best to stop seeing each other until the case is resolved.”

Dylan jerked her hand from his. “What?”

“I’m getting too distracted by you to focus on it.”

“You’re blaming me?”

“No. It’s just better for now.”

“Don’t you think that’s something you should have told me before we had sex?” she growled out and he knew she was way past pissed.

“Dylan, baby—”

“Do not call me that. Don’t you think I know when a…cowboyis trying to sweettalk me into something?”

“I’m not. I can’t jeopardize this case, and if I’m not concentrating, I will. I want to find your bull as quickly as possible, so we can be together when the case is solved.”

“And if it’s not solved?”

“That would be up to you, Dylan.”

Dylan shook her head. “You need to leave. Find my bull and stay away from me. God! Am I ever going to learn?”

Alex stood up and marched angrily towards the kitchen where he put on his coat and hat. He opened the door and turned around before walking out.

“I’ll leave. If you want another agent on this case, call the department, ask for Dave Merkle, and request that I be replaced. But good luck with that, Dylan, because no other agents are available. I asked to be removed because of how I feel about you, and no one can take over. So, we’ll just stay the hell away from each other and once Idosolve this case, you’ll never hear from me again.” He slammed the door as he walked out.

Alex stood on the porch, sucked the cooler air into his lungs, then jogged down the steps, got inside his truck, and tore out of there as if the hounds of hell were chasing him. He’d take them over a pissed off woman any day.

Dylan pulled out a chair from the table, sat, and glared at the door. She cursed under her breath. Another cowboy doing what they do best—leaving. It was bound to happen sooner or later. They all leave, some just take longer than others, and some leave like their asses are on fire. She got up and headed for bed, hoping that Agent Alexander Reeves wouldn’t invade her dreams.

The next day, she called Marlowe and Peyton to come over to her house. This wasn’t something she wanted to discuss over the phone; she needed their support. As they all sat down on the couch, Dylan shared the details of last night with Alex. When she finished talking and they didn’t say anything, she looked at them expectantly.

“What? I thought you would support me because another damn cowboy did his thing and left.”

“Pffft,” Marlowe scoffed. “A cowboy didn’t leave you. A determined agent did so he could focus on his job instead of getting distracted by you.”

“Oh, please.”

“I agree with her, Dylan. Alex left because he needed to work on the case... for you. If he feels he can’t concentrate, why get mad at him for wanting to do his job well? No, you messed up.”

Dylan looked at them in disbelief before shaking her head.

“This was not the kind of support I was hoping for.”

“We’re supporting Alex in this,” Peyton said firmly while holding Dylan’s hand.

“Dylan, it’s clear that he cares about you deeply, but he also has a responsibility to his job. Can’t you see that?”

Dylan shook her head. She couldn’t believe they weren’t on her side about this, but then, were they right? Was she holding him back from solving the case because he was interested in her?
