“You bitch.” Travis drew his fist back and punched her in the face. The pain was excruciating, and she fell to the ground, trying to stay awake.

“Mama!” Zoey screamed and ran toward Dylan, but Travis caught her, picked her up, and held her. All the while Zoey screamed and tried to get down.

“Put her down! Now!” Dylan shouted.

“I’m taking her, Dylan. You can’t stop me.”

Dylan looked at Zoey to see tears rolling down her face and screaming.

“Mommy!” She put her little hands against his shoulders and pushed away but he held on to her.

“It’s okay, baby. Mama is not going to let him take you. I promise,” Dylan choked back tears. She could kill Travis at this moment.

Travis grinned. “Don’t make promises you can’t keep, Dylan.”

“Just where do you think you’re going to go?”

“Don’t you worry about it, but I’ll be gone before the law figures it out.”

Dylan slowly got to her feet and ran at him. She tried to get Zoey from him, but he shoved her to the ground and stood over her. As she looked toward the barn doors, she saw Alex running at them with his weapon drawn.

“Put her down,” Alex shouted as he pointed his gun at Travis.

“So, if it isn’t the livestock agent. Are you fucking my wife, Agent?”

“First off, she isn’t your wife, and second, it’s none of your business what Dylan does or who she sees. And just how do you know I’m a livestock agent? Were you involved in the theft of Dylan’s bull?”

“Why would I take her bull?”

“For money, you dumb shit.”

“I didn’t have anything to do with it. I’ve been watching her and saw you. That’s how I know you’re a livestock agent.”

“Put her down,” Alex snapped.

“I’m taking my daughter.”

Alex took a step forward, aiming his weapon at Travis. “You don’t have a daughter. Put. Her. Down,” he repeated.

“You won’t do anything while I’m holding her.” Travis grinned.

“Don’t bet on it. I’m one hell of a shot. How about you put her down and we go at this like men.” Alex holstered his gun.

“Alex, no,” Dylan said.

Travis grinned. “Do you think I’m afraid of you?”

“As a matter of fact, I do.” Alex smirked when Martin narrowed his eyes.

“You think you’re funny, don’t you?”

“There is nothing funny about any of this.”

“I don’t have to listen to this. I’m leaving… with my daughter.”

“Over my dead body. You’re not stepping out of this barn with her.”

“Over your dead body? That could be arranged.”
