“The fence has been cut again.”

“Shit. I’m on my way.”

“I’ll meet you at the barn.”

“All right.” He disconnected.

Dylan replaced her phone, nudged the horse, and ran it back to the barn. She’d saddle a horse for Alex while she waited. Damn it. Who was doing this and why?

Once she had the horse saddled, she waited for him to arrive. She sat on a bale of hay to wait, and it wasn’t long before she heard a vehicle pull up outside. She pushed to her feet, walked to the entrance to see Alex emerging from his truck, and her heart skipped a beat. She was so in love with him. He started toward the barn, and her eyes roamed over that tall, sexy frame. When he entered the barn, she walked toward him.

“Why is this still happening?” she asked.

Alex shook his head. “I don’t know. Take me there again.”

“All right.”

They both mounted the horses and Dylan led the way to the fence. Once there, they dismounted, and Alex walked along the fence. She watched him squat down and shine his flashlight on the ground. When he straightened up, he looked along the fence line, but shook his head and looked at her.

“I don’t think it’s been cut recently, but the tire tracks are fresh. I’m going to stay up here tonight.”

“I’m staying with you.”

“Dylan—”

“No! Do not tell me I can’t be here. I want this bastard, whoever it is, and if I have to stay here myself tonight, I will.” She heard him mutter under his breath. “What?”

“I said you’re stubborn as hell,” he snapped. “This is too dangerous for you.”

She folded her arms, stared at him, and said nothing but bit back a grin when he sighed.

“Damn it. All right, but I can’t be here on the job. We’re not even sure what’s going on, so we’ll camp out.”

“Camp out?”

“Yes. Since Zoey is with your mom this weekend, we’ll come here and camp. If I see something, I’ll call it in.”

“I don’t want you to get into trouble, Alex.”

“As long as we’re just camping, I won’t.”

“If you’re sure?”

“The only thing I’m sure about is how damn hardheaded you are. I know you’ll come up here no matter what, so I’d rather be here. If Dave finds out and fires my ass, you’ll have to support me.” He grinned.

Dylan laughed. “I’d do that.”

“Good. Okay, let’s head back, and once the sun begins to set, we’ll come set up a tent.”

“Okay. I’m glad it’s not cold.”

“I’d keep you warm. Let’s go.”

After cooling the horses, Alex kissed her lips, strode to his truck, and then drove off. Dylan sighed, walked to the house, and entered. She was a little worried about staying up there when rustlers could be around, but she knew she’d be safe with Alex.

The full moon shone down through the branches of the trees as they crept toward the fence. Alex didn’t know if anyone was around but wasn’t taking chances. Even with the moonbeams lighting up the area, it was still dark and dangerous.
