“Thank you, sir.”

“So, you were in the woods with Ms. Walters when you were shot at. Is that correct?”

“Yes, sir.”

“And why was she there, Agent Reeves?”

“I wasn’t on duty—”

“Agent Reeves, I asked why she was there, not if you were on duty or not,” McMillon said.

“Yes, sir. I was just clarifying that she was not there with me on a case.”

“You’re telling me you were not on duty?”

“That’s exactly what I’m telling you. Ms. Walters and I were camping. We were shot at, not the other way around.”

“I see. But you were where the fence was cut.”

“I wasn’t there on a stakeout, Mr. McMillon. We thought the ordeal was over.”

“So, are you telling me that you and Ms. Walters are an item?”

“Uh—”

“Uh is not an answer, Agent Reeves. You know it’s frowned upon to get personally involved with anyone while on a case.”

“Yes, sir.”

“But yet, you did.” McMillon sighed. “Do you realize the trouble this department would be in if she had died?”

“I do.” Alex cleared his throat. “Could I speak freely, sir?”

“Of course.”

“I was attracted to Dylan Walters from the start, but we stayed away from each other until the case was solved.”Slight lie there, Reeves, but he couldn’t tell McMillon that.

“You know, Agent Reeves, I don’t believe that, but I can’t prove it.” McMillon shook his head. “I’m going to give you the benefit of the doubt on this but only because Dave told me you asked to be removed from the case for that reason.”

“I appreciate that, sir.”

“This had better never happen again.” McMillon looked at Dave. “Your agents need to keep their minds on their cases, not the victim.”

Dave sighed. “Curtis, no matter what you say, you know as well as I do, that I have some of the best agents in my office. Yes, some of them make mistakes, but I wouldn’t replace any of them.”

“Out of your office, Dave, there have been three agents, including Agent Reeves, who have gotten personally involved, or not followed protocol. You do have good agents, but you need to get them to concentrate on their jobs.”

“No matter how involved they get, they do their damn jobs, Curtis, and you know it. If you have a problem with the way I run my office, then fire me,” Dave snapped.

“No need for that, Dave. I’m just telling you what’s expected from each agent. No fraternizing with anyone involved in the case.” McMillon looked at Alex. “Are we clear on this?”

“Yes, sir.”

“Dave?”

“Whatever you say, Curtis.”

“All right. Well, in this situation, I’m going to take your word for it, Agent Reeves, but this is your final warning. If you ever do this again, you’ll no longer be a livestock agent. You’re dismissed.”
