Sam chuckled as he took the bag, tossed the strap over his shoulder and lifted his daughter as TBone led the way out to his dad’s truck.

Putting them into their car seats, he got behind the wheel. He hoped Melora would be home to greet them, but when he pulled up to the house, her car wasn’t in the driveway. He took the kids and their things inside but the house was dark and quiet.

As it was almost dinner time, Sam began cooking them supper. Now, he remembered a light was out in the kitchen. So he got the ladder out to change the bulb and then he had good lighting again.

When he was done, TBone was standing there with a grin on his small face and gave him a thumbs up.

Sam made the kids chicken nuggets and fries for their supper. Later, he gave them baths. He tried had not to let his worry over Melora show but apparently, he didn’t do a very good job of it.

When he finally got TBone into his bed, the young boy stared at him and asked, “Daddy, where is Mama? Is she okay?”

“Of course, she’s okay, son,” Sam tried to convince the kid and himself. “Hopefully, she’ll be home when you get up in the morning. Now go to sleep. You’ve got school tomorrow.”

“Ok, Daddy.” TBone turned on his side and closed his eyes tight.

Sam kissed his son on the forehead and went to check on Shaw. She was sleeping but she was also whimpering in her sleep. Sam placed his hand on her back and hummed the song Melora always sang to her at night to put her to sleep. It seemed to settle his daughter down.

Sam left her room to walk to the living room. He tried to call Melora but she still wasn’t answering her phone. He growled and then did the dishes. Afterward, he tried to call her again.

When she didn’t answer her phone yet again, Sam really began to worry. With a frustrated growl, he paced the living room. He decided to call Izzy and when she answered he asked, “Have you heard from Melora today?”

Izzy sighed. “No Bones, like I told Cassie, I haven’t heard from Melora in a few days. Have you tried calling her?”

“Yeah, I’ve been calling her all evening and she won’t pick up her damn phone,” Sam stated with gritted teeth.

“Well, maybe she doesn’t want to talk to you.” Izzy growled back. “You’ve been a dick about things lately.”

He chose to ignore her remark and went on, “Izzy, she’s never missed getting the kids from Cassie’s before and she’s never left them alone this long either. No one has heard from her. This is not like her. Where the fucking hell would she be?”

“I don’t know,” Izzy admitted with a heavy sigh in her voice. “But you’re right, she’s never left the kids this long before. Not without telling someone anyway. Keep trying to call her and I will too. Maybe she’ll answer one of us.”

“And you’d better call me if she answers your call,” Sam said. “I mean it. This is beyond who’s wrong or right.”

Sam kept trying to call but his calls stopped as they went unanswered. It was quite late when he sat down on the sofa and raised his hands to his head in worry. He sighed hard and laid against the back of the sofa. He suddenly felt so damn tired. Glancing at the clock on the wall, it was now 1 a.m. Peering down at the phone in his hand, he saw it was almost dead now. He got up and stumbled to the kitchen to plug it into the jack. He glared at the phone and growled, “Where the hell are you, Melora? Why the fuckin’ hell aren’t you here with your family?”

He stalked to the front door, and opened it to stare out into the shadows of the night, searching for her vehicle. “Where are you darlin’? Why aren’t you home in your own bed tonight?” He visually searched the empty streets, still looking for his runaway wife.

With a sigh, he finally closed the door and locked it. He felt utterly defeated and exhausted as he made his way back to the sofa and laid down to close his eyes. Just before he fell asleep, he muttered, “Please baby, come home to us, to me. I can’t live without you. I don’t want to live without you. I need you, Silk. Your kids need you. Please come home.”

Sometime later, he was snoring gently and his whole world was playing out in his dreams. His woman was smiling at him. She looked like she always had when she was in love with him. He saw her first in her wedding dress, then in the dress she wore when she came home from the hospital after TBone was born. Next, an image appeared in his dream of her in the outfit she wore home after Shaw was born. But his sweet dreams turned ugly as he saw the look she wore when he accused her of hiding secrets from him. The look of betrayal and pain in her eyes just before she slapped his face when he’d accused her of cheating on him.

Sam called out as he felt that slap again and he woke up as he fell off the sofa to the floor. He sat there for a moment as a lone tear rolled down his face. Why hadn’t he seen the truth then? He’d been so angry that he never saw the truth. And it had been right there in her eyes. “I’m sorry, Silk,” he whispered in the dark. “I’m so sorry I accused you of that. The fuck was I thinking? I know you would never betray me, not like that.”

Finally awake in more ways than one, he shook his head. “But I want to tell you this in person, so please come home to me, baby. I need you so much. I can’t even breathe without you in my world.”

Chapter Nine

Sam groaned as the light of the new day shone over his face. He could barely open his eyes when he saw the dawn breaking through the back door. He glanced at the clock on the wall and saw it was very early. Five thirty a.m.

He groaned again as he realized he’d fallen asleep only four hours ago. He got to his feet and stumbled to the kitchen where he grabbed his phone up off the counter and glared at it. There were no messages and no missed calls. He growled and shook his head. “Where the hell are you, Silk?” He tried to call Melora again and this time the operator told him the call could not be placed as the phone was no longer in service. “What the hell?” he muttered as he stared down at it like it was some foreign object. “Out of service?”

He jumped as the phone in his hand rang. He checked it but it wasn’t who he wanted to hear from. This call was from Izzy. He growled his hello when he answered the call.

“Bones, I just tried to call her and her phone is no longer in service?” Izzy sounded upset. “What the hell is that all about?”

“How the fuck am I supposed to know?” Sam exclaimed.

“I just got the same thing. Her phone should still be working. I know it was last night.”
