My darling’s wails catch the attention of a burly male with a thick brown beard. Concern overtakes the man’s features when he hears my child. He finds her shortly after, and the moment I see the care he takes when picking her up gives me the reassurance I need to finally turn and leave.

A piece of my heart will always remain with my darling, but I am doing what I must to keep her safe.

I will continue my work with The Alliance to ensure she is protected—to keep her hidden from the Fallen and The Darkness.

Since the moment she drew her first breath, she became the center of my world. And that will never, ever change.

Chapter1

“Ronnie, are you listening to me?”

I glance up and stare into my best guy friend’s familiar green eyes. They’re filled with concern. Rightfully so. I’ve been sitting in this arm chair, silent and frozen like a statue for half of the morning.

“No. Sorry.”

Joey’s lips turn down. “It’s okay. You don’t need to apologize.”

I go back to staring at the flickering fireplace. We’re sitting in parlor of The Alliance’s Headquarters while everyone else is somewhere else. trying to figure out what to do about the Darkness’s growing strength. Normally, I’d want to be part of the discussion. Normally, I’d be curious to hear all the latest details about the evil entity threatening to take down Dark and Light Fallen alike.

But I’m sitting here with Joey, barely able to keep it together after the events of the last twenty four hours.

The Light Council is searching for me. Or, rather, the person responsible for healing injured Fallen with skill they’ve never witness. Corrupt members of the Dark Fallen arrested me and probably planned to hand me over to the Darkness. A sorceress, Odette, came to my rescue at Lukas’ request. Joey, one of my two closest childhood friends, is a werewolf and he knows about Fallen angels.

Oh, yeah, and I just met my mother. And, apparently, she’s the leader of The Alliance.

Emotion clogs my throat. It was surreal to see my birth mother, but it was even more strange to see how young she looks. I know angels don’t age at the rate of humans. But still, it was weird to think of the beautiful, youthful woman as my mother. With her modern attire, shiny hair, and flawless face, she looked no older than twenty-five.

For a moment, I was both shocked and excited to meet her. But excitement swiftly gave way to guilt.

I have parents. Janet and Oliver Messenger are the best parents. They love me, and I love them.

But they have no idea what you really are.

I shove the thought aside. My parents would love me, even if they learned the truth about my Fallen heritage. I don’t doubt that for a second. I’m not in the market for another parent. Especially not one who left me at birth.

It doesn’t matter if it was for my own good. My birth mother—Dina—abandoned me and left me to face the dangers of the world alone. Yancor demons would have trained me of power on my eighteenth birthday if it weren’t for Zeke and Adrian, my two Dark Fallenbasherten, coming to my rescue.

“It’s almost time for lunch,” Joey interrupts my thoughts. “Want me to bring you something?”

“I’m not hungry.”

“You have to eat, Ronnie.”

“Haven’t you heard? I’m a full-blooded angel. I don’t think I need food to survive.” My tone is dry and the attempt at humor falls flat. I don’t have it in me to make a second attempt.

“Ronnie.” Joey sighs. “Please talk to me. Tell me what you’re thinking.”

My eyes slide back to him. “You know what I’m thinking.”

“The fact I’m a werewolf?”

That’s one of the many things making my head ache…

“Among other things.”

Sympathy covers his features. “Dina?”

I appreciate he doesn’t call her my mother.
