Prologue

Casey

Two days ago

Thisisit.I’mfinally marrying the man of my dreams.Michael Velenti. I’m going to beMrs. Michael Velenti. How is this my life? My best friend since high school, Bridget, pulls at the lace on my dress, making sure it’s framing my body perfectly, while my mother stands behind me to get all the tiny buttons. There’s a mirror in front of me, giving me the perfect view of everything they’re doing, and I feel like a princess.

Michael and I have been planning this special day for over a year, and I can’t believe it’s finally here.

“There,” Bridget says with a bright smile on her face. "All done. You look beautiful, Casey.”

“Can you believe it, Bridg? If it wasn’t for you, I would never have given Michael a second glance. You encouraging me to give him a chance and stop crushing on Emmett has turned me into a bride! Oh my God,I’m getting married!”I squeal as I throw my arms around her in a hug.

“I’ve never seen a more beautiful bride, Case!” she says as she hugs me back. “I’m just going to make sure everything is okay downstairs, see if they need any help before the ceremony starts, okay.”

“Honey,” my mom says softly next to me, her fingers threading perfectly through mine. “You look beautiful. I’m so happy for you and Michael.”

“Thanks, Mom,” I say just as there’s a knock on the door, and my big brother, Dominic, walks in.

Dominic lets out a shrill whistle when he sees me in my dress and circles his finger in the air, silently telling me to give him a twirl, and I do exactly that. “Most beautiful bride I’ve ever seen.”

“Thanks, Dom. You scrub up nicely yourself.”

“Are you about ready? Shall we get this show on the road?” He asks.

I nod, then glance around the room with a frown. “Let me try to find Bridget, she’s around here somewhere.”

Dominic steps up to me and says, “Let me go find her, you don’t need to worry about anything other than walking down that aisle.”

“No, it’s okay. You guys go on ahead and we’ll meet you downstairs in a minute.”

I head toward the area where the wedding planner might be, her frown pulling me right over to her. “Hey, Izzy, have you seen Bridget?”

She looks up at me, blinking in confusion. “She was here a few minutes ago, but I assumed she’d gone back upstairs, sorry.”

“It’s okay, I’ll find her. She’s around here somewhere.”

I head towards the ladies’ restroom in search of her, and as I push the wooden door open, I scrunch my eyebrows in confusion.

That confusion quickly turns to anger and betrayal when I step further in the bathroom, my gaze colliding with familiar pink fabric and my soon-to-be husband’s face in the mirror. My gasp is audible, forcing them to stop and flinch away from each other. Bridget’s lipstick is smudged, while Michael’s pants are halfway down his thighs.

“Casey,” Michael starts.

“N-no,” I stutter, stumbling back a few steps before scurrying out of the bathroom without turning back. I’m gasping for air when I get down the staircase, tears blurring my vision, and a hand falls onto my elbow. “No,” I snap, snatching my arm from the grip.

“Case, it’s me,” my brother’s best friend, Emmett, says, his mouth pulled into a frown at the sight of me. “What the hell is going on?”

Michael’s frame comes to a stop at the top of the stairs, lasering in on me, and I grab hold of Emmett’s hand before dragging him outside with me. His car isn’t hard to find, especially when the bright orange is the only one in the parking lot, and I make a beeline for it. “Just get me out of here, Emmett. Now.”

He doesn’t ask any questions as he backs up, nearly hitting Michael as he charges into the lot, and I blow out a sigh of relief the more distance that puts between the two of us. My phone vibrates incessantly from my clutch, and I know without looking at it that Michael and Bridget are calling me.

What just happened? All I know for sure is my fiancé and best friend have been cheating on me, and I’m alone in a car with Emmett Lincoln.

The object of my desire since I was in high school.
