He doesn’t say anything as we pull into the parking lot full of other cars, not even as he gets out of the car and comes around to my side. The door swings open and he stares at me in awe, his hand outstretched to take mine, and I instantly give in to it. I gasp when he doesn’t move toward the entrance and instead shuts the passenger door before pushing me against it.

“You make me crazy,” he whispers, his lips brushing faintly against mine.

I understand exactly how he feels, though. That moment in the car isn’t something I would’ve done before, but then again, none of this is something I would’ve done. A couple pulls up next to us, smiling at each other as they walk hand in hand into the office, and I smile at the man in front of me. “Let’s go find out what the gender of our baby is.”

I’ll admit, the feel of his fingers threading through mine as he leads us ahead is nothing like I ever thought. I’d always imagined what they would feel like, but never in a million years did I think it would feel this right. I only wish that Dominic could be a part of this moment.

We go through the same steps as we do every single time I come here, and then I’m being taken to a much larger room than usual with a small hospital bed. The nurse looks at me, waving a hand over everything. “This is where the anatomy scan takes place. Are you finding out the gender today?”

I nod excitedly. “Yes, I’m excited.” It would’ve been nice to find out earlier, and I could’ve, but I wanted a little more time before knowing for sure. There’s been a lot going on, and now that everything has calmed down, I’m more than ready to know if it’s a boy or girl.

“The doctor will be in shortly to get things going,” The nurse says before walking softly out of the large space.

I’m just getting situated onto the large bed when the doctor knocks on the door and walks inside with a big smile. “Ready to see how big your little peanut is?”

Emmett and I nod at the same time, smiles bright on our faces.

“Alright, lie on your back, and let’s see how this bean is doing.” She walks over to the ultrasound screen, grabbing the gel to put on my belly and the wand, then hovers her hand over my exposed skin. “This might be cold, sorry.”

The least of my concerns is the temperature of the gel as I catch sight of our baby laying perfectly inside of me. While the doctor tells me everything we are looking at, I’m trying to get a peek at the gender, but come up empty. As far as I can tell though, everything looks perfect with the baby.

“Do you want to know the gender?” The doctor asks, holding the wand just above my belly.

“Yes,” Emmett and I say in unison, which causes her to chuckle.

Warmth spreads through me when Emmett walks over, his hand threading through mine, and I glance at the screen beside us. A smile beams on my face as she angles it perfectly for what most women call the potty shot, and I squeeze Emmett’s hand in response.

“Well, guys, congratulations,” she says, zooming in on the space between the baby’s tiny legs. “Looks like you’re having a perfect little girl.”

My feelings only come closer to the surface when I look up at Emmett and find a stray tear falling down his cheek. We’re having a little girl… if only Dominic could’ve been here to find out with us.

Chapter Sixteen

Emmett

WhenIgetintowork the next day, there’s nothing that can stop the smile from shining on my face. I’m having a little girl and I never thought something could make me this happy. Fran is sitting at her desk when I walk by, briefly glancing up at me with the phone poised against her ear, and she raises a curious brow.

There was something magical about standing next to Casey’s bed, watching as our child appeared on the screen in front of us, and it only made me that much more aware of the feelings I have for her. I’m falling for her, it’s that simple.

She’s got this smile that can brighten even the darkest of days and such a big heart, I’m not even sure I would deserve a small piece of it – but I’m going to try. I’m close to my desk when Fran pops her head into the room, surveying the space with a frown, then she steps inside. There’s a million questions rolling through her mind no doubt, especially since she’s spent the past few years seeing me as the hard boss.

“Spit it out,” I say with a chuckle.

Fran sighs and sits quietly in the leather chair, crossing one leg over the other in typical women fashion. “What’s got you looking all bright this morning?”

“I’m having a baby.”

This isn’t something I’ve told anyone and I know Fran will keep this secret to herself, which I love her to death for. Saying it out loud lifts a small weight from my chest and I smile brightly, meanwhile Fran has her mouth dropped open in shock. “A baby?” She shakes her head. “Since when have you been seeing someone? There’s no way I would’ve missed this important detail.”

“It’s new and I wanted to keep it private, but we found out what we were having yesterday and I needed to tell someone.”

Fran lets a wide smile take over her face and she leans forward, elbows on her thighs and hands resting under her chin. “Well, tell me then!”

“We’re having a girl.”

Just saying it again makes my heart feel full, like this is the moment I’ve been waiting for all my life.

“That’s awesome, congrats, Emmett! You deserve a family to go home to.” Her statement makes my smile drop, hating that it hasn’t been a topic of discussion between Casey and I. She’s had no issue coming to my house and letting me put my hands all over her body, pleasing her until her throat is hoarse from her screams, but we’ve had no real conversation about a definitive plan for the baby. Fran frowns. “Unless that’s not how things are going?”
