Emmett walks confidently out of the room, a wet cloth sitting in the palm of his hand, and stops in front of me. I close my eyes while he wipes me off, then jump from the edge of his desk. This only complicates things further the more we give in to this pull between us and it’s becoming painfully obvious that neither of us will be able to walk away.

So, where does that leave us?

I wrap my arms around myself, wishing I could rush from his office but remembering that he tore the leggings I was wearing. He lifts his phone from his desk and types something on the screen before sitting it back down, then leans against the desk with his eyes on me. There’s questions swimming through his eyes and a knock sounds at the door before he can voice them.

“I’ve got the clothes you requested, Emmett,” Fran says from the other side of the door.

He pushes toward the door, leaning his body out and grabbing the new pile of clothes with a thankful smile, then shuts it back up and walks them over to me. “These are for you.”

***

After a long few minutes of awkward silence with Emmett watching me as I slipped the new clothes over my body, I’m finally stepping into the warm night air. I take a deep breath, letting it seep into my burning soul, then head toward the freshly waxed car sitting in the parking lot. It shouldn’t surprise me that Emmett has someone come get the car to be detailed before bringing it back to me, but it does because I’ve never seen that side of him.

I’ve always been invisible to him and now it’s like I’m the only person he sees.

The drive to Dominic’s is quick and I grab my purse before slipping out of the car, slamming the door shut behind me. I’m digging into my purse for the house key when the sound of footsteps sounds ahead and I dart my gaze up, catching sight of the last person I ever expected to see in front of me.

“M-Michael?”

I thought I was out of the woods since he never got back to me when I blurted out I was pregnant. I’d hoped that would get him to leave me alone, but apparently it only made him more eager. My hand freezes in my purse, the keys are still nowhere to be found, and Michael smiles as if there’s no bad blood between us.

“What are you doing here?” I finally choke out, nerves overtaking me.

He steps closer to me, a hand reaching out to touch my face. “I’ve missed you, Casey.”

Missed me?

He cheated on me with my friend and has the nerve to show up claiming he misses me? I glare at him and shake his hand away from me. “Great, you can go back where you came from now.” When I try to step around him, he follows my movement and blocks my path.

“Let’s talk about this, Baby.”

“I’m not your baby, you made that perfectly clear when your pants were shoved down your legs while you fucked my friend. Now, excuse me.”

He scoffs. “That’s rich, considering the news you gave me over the phone. I can forgive you for that, we’ll get through it together.”

I bend over and laugh. “Forgive me? We broke up!” The sound of a car door shutting has me darting my gaze across the parking lot and my eyes widen in alarm. “You need to get out of here, now.”

He shakes his head and frowns. “Not until we talk about this. Come on, Baby, you know we’re good together.” I stumble back when he reaches out for me, just in time for Emmett to come to a stop in front of me. “Who the fuck are you?” Michael asks, sneering at Emmett as if he’s dirt beneath his shoe.

Emmett doesn’t say anything and gives no hint as to what’s going to happen next. One minute they are staring at each other, the next Michael’s head is snapping to the side and he falls to the ground. I slap a hand over my mouth, watching as Emmett climbs on top of Michael’s flailing body and lands a few more jabs into his ribs.

“That,” Emmetts growls out. “Is for everything you did to her and the nerve you have for approaching her.” His hand comes up in the air again before he swings a hard right hook into Michael’s jaw. “That’s for touching her when you shouldn’t be.” he seethes.

I’m caught off guard when Dominic rushes over, gripping Emmett’s wrist and keeping him from landing another hit. “What the fuck is going on here?” His gaze snaps to mine, eyebrows scrunching, before he looks back at the man lying under Emmett and recognition lights his features. “Michael?”

Michael groans and tries to sit up only to be held down by Emmett’s legs. My legs are shaking. The need to run to Emmett dangerously close to taking over.

Dominic comes over to me, his finger pinching the bottom of my chin as he surveys possible damage to my face. “What did he do to you, Casey?”

I pull away from him and frown. “Nothing.”

Then, why the hell is Emmett throwing punches like a damn maniac?” He runs a hand through his hair before turning back to his best friend and shakes his head. “Let him go, man, then come inside for a minute.”

Something about the look in Emmett’s eyes as he glances at me tells me this is not going to be the night I had expected. Everything is about to crash around us and there’s nothing but doubt in his gaze before he walks forward and gives me his back.
