If he could get inside my head right now, he’d know that the only thing I’m going crazy over is this need to wrap myself around Emmett.

Chapter Four

Emmett

Assoonasthetail lights disappear, I snap my attention toward the thug standing a few feet away from me. His gaze is hard, trying to intimidate me but failing miserably, and I crack my knuckles before stepping toward him. Just as he did moments ago, he lifts his gun into the air and I chuckle. “There’s really no need for that.”

“Stay away from me,” he seethes, the gun aimed right at my chest. “I’ll shoot if you take another step.” His hand shakes, and I smirk. If he shoots, it’s unlikely that the bullet will even graze my skin.

“Is this what you like to do?” I ask, cocking my head to the side and studying him. “Wait for women to walk out of buildings? Do you get a thrill out of the fear you invoke in them?”

His eyes shine at the question and he shrugs. “We all have a life, this just happens to be mine.”

I chuckle. “Unfortunately for you, you chose the wrong establishment to target.” His hand shakes harder, and the gun he was holding crashes to the ground. I’ve got this primal instinct to protect Casey, and I’m not sure why. Well, I am, but I’m trying to convince myself that it’s nothing and just the lingering effects of our night together.

“Come on, man, just let me go,” the guy begs, his voice shaking.

“Now, you know I can’t do that. You see, you went after someone I care about, and I’m not going to take that lightly. “ His eyes bug out when I swing a right hook into his jaw, blood splattering from the corner of his mouth. “The cops would’ve been the easier option for you, so don’t get too excited that I didn’t call them. I’m exacting my own form of punishment.”

He grunts when I swing again, the sound like music to my ears. I’m not sure what’s coming over me, but the thought of him pointing the gun at Casey has me throwing punch after punch as my anger takes over. My vision is nothing but a blinding red.

“Okay, okay!” the guy cries out. “I’m sorry.”

I should stop, or else I’m going to beat him to death. My knuckles are swollen from the punches I’ve landed, and it will only get worse if I continue. Instead of throwing another punch, I grip the collar of his shirt and pull him closer to me. “Stay the hell away from my casino, got it?”

He nods frantically, then runs off through the empty parking lot.

My BMW is sitting at the far end of the lot, leaving the closer spots open for the other staff members, and I easily slip into the leather seats with a sigh. The sooner I get home, the closer I get to getting Casey out of my head with a good dose of alcohol. The car purrs to life when I push the start button, and I head in the direction of my house.

When I push through my front door, nothing but silence greets me, and I take it in for a moment. This is my safe place, where I can get away from everyone who always tends to bother me, but now it’s tainted with images of Casey.

I’m pouring myself a third drink when the flash of headlights shines along my wall, and I look out the front window, my brows furrowing at the sight of Dominic getting out of his car. What could he possibly need from me right now?

I’m nervous as I pull the front door open, his eyes shining with anger as he stomps up the front porch steps. I squeeze my eyes shut, more than prepared for his fist to connect with my face, but after a few minutes, nothing happens. He’s staring at me in confusion when I pop one eye open, and he asks, “What the hell happened?”

“What do you mean?”

He nudges his head toward the entrance of my house. “Think I could come in for a bit?”

I shrug and push the door open further, letting him squeeze through it. “What’s going on?”

His gaze snaps to mine, and he narrows it. “I don’t know, man, you tell me.”

Is he talking about me and Casey spending a night together, or something else? If I bring it up, there’s a chance he’s not even talking about that, and I’ll let the cat out of the bag

I scrub a hand over my face and sigh. “It’s been a long night, man, just tell me what you’re here for.”

“Did you get him?” Dominic asks, pointing toward my now-covered hands.

He’s talking about the thug who attacked Casey, thank God. I nod. “He was holding a gun to her head, and I needed to teach him a lesson.”

Dominic nods slowly and blows out a rough breath. “Sorry for charging here like this. As soon as she told me, I wanted to see what the hell happened.”

“Well, first of all, she was trying to walk home,” I mutter. “Which is why I’m going to give you these.” The keys I grabbed from the key rack shine brightly on the kitchen counter, and I swipe them up, letting them dangle from my finger. “Bring her by in the morning, and she can start using one of my cars.”

“You don’t have to do that, Emmett, she’s my responsibility.”

I wave him off. “It mainly sits in the garage, let her get some use out of it if she needs it.”
