“Learn anything useful?”

“Not that I know of,” I said.

“Did you eat lunch?”

I paused at this and chewed my lip. “I had a pretty big breakfast. I’m sure dinner will be just as filling.”

Kai’s eyes narrowed, but instead of this irritating me, it made me feel watched out for. It was such a new sensation, and I liked it.

“Uh-huh, that’s your reasoning, and not just you forgetting?” We were mated for such a short amount of time, but he sure did know me well. “Do me a favor,” he said, voice low. “We need to meet Oren out at the servants’ gate at sundown, so take a bit of time to go to the dining hall and see if there’s still food out.”

“Dining hall? Like the caf at Canid?”

“More like a restaurant. You don’t order, but you sit at a table and carts are brought over with different food.”

“Uh, yeah, I guess I could.” I blinked. I’d watched enough television to get the process, but I was still nervous about being thrust into the situation without warning. How Kai described it sounded much more manageable. “I could at least put something in my stomach.”

“Spoken like a true shifter,” Kai said with a chuckle, leaning in to press a kiss on my cheeks. I didn’t know what possessed me, but I turned my head to catch his lips with my own.

It was just a little thing, just a quick moment of connection, but it still sent a trickle of electricity through me. I rarely started a kiss if Kai wasn’t already being romantic, so it felt taboo for me to give him such a simple peck.

I should have known better.

One moment it was just a tiny little kiss, the two of us grinning at each other. The next, our bodies were colliding, Kai’s arm around my waist, crushing me to him as his lips ravaged mine.

If our first kiss was innocence, light and fluffy, this second one wasravenous, full of heat and want, carnal as wolves could be. I felt myself being lifted then moved backward until my ass was set firmly on the same solid desk I’d been sitting by.

Fuck,I wanted to be utterly consumed by him, to be burned to ash by the sheer heat of our attraction, nothing left but an eternally smoldering cinder.

But as I wrapped my arms around his neck, Kai pulled away, his face regretful.

“Sorry,” he murmured, one of his fingers tracing my lips. He looked like he wanted to eat me, and I truly did want his teeth to sink into my gland and bond us forever.

I was just now getting into all those aspects of mating I’d always been afraid of before. Was it our bond strengthening, or did the stress of the city just make Kai and our fated connection seem so much safer and more familiar?

I wished I could ask someone, but doing so would mean admitting all the lustful and amorous thoughts going through my head, and I just wasn’t up for it. I could only imagine Darla squealing in delight and teasing me for ages, or Kai wiggling his eyebrows and saying he could help me with some of those fantasies.

I guess I knew him too well just as much as he knew me.

“I wish I could spend the rest of your day at your side, but there are some things I have to see to before we leave.”

“I understand,” I said glumly. “I’ll see you later.”

“That you will.”

He leaned in and pressed another chaste kiss to me before heading back out. I watched him go, feeling my cheeks flush with an echo of his heat.

Was... was I falling in love?

No, it was far too soon for that. I’d pined for Kai for years, but it was just that: pining. We’d been together less than three months, so thinking I was in love with him was utterly ridiculous.

Ugh.

I needed to eat.

But I wasn’t about to go to the dining hall alone, and I didn’t really have an idea how to get there, so I figured I needed to go talk to my best friend, as Kai called her.

Oh, why was I even being cagey? Darla absolutely was my best, and possibly only friend.
