It wasn’t often that my internal voice ordered around my inner wolf, but it certainly didn’t make me feel great. So, to distract myself, I kept playing with the young Alisandre.

I didn’t realize how much time passed until Kai walked through the door, smelling of forest and wet grass. Unfortunately, he was alone, no Irina beside him.

I could feel through our bond just how defeated he felt, so I sat down at the dining room table and made a big show of my exhaustion.

“Well, I am just bushed.”

“Aw, do you need to stop playing, Miss Witch?”

“I do. But why don’t you play with my good friend Kai? He’s a magical wolf-man if you didn’t know.”

The girl whirled, hands still glowing from the spell held lovingly within them. “Wait, you’re a wolf-guy?” I laughed at how many different ways she said “shifter”. What a cutie.

It seemed Kai was right on board because all of the melancholy and worry I could feel simmering below the surface of his skin bled away as he crouched down to the young girl’s level. “I am, but it’s kind of a secret, so don’t tell anyone outside the house, okay?”

“Don’t worry, I won’t.”

“That’s my girl. Now, I believe someone mentioned playing…”

That was how Kai, Captain of Fort Canid, ended up chasing the young girl all around the house on all fours. Yet he remained a human the whole time, and he didn’t shift when he put her on his shoulders and ran through the hall. He also laid on his back while holding the girl aloft with his feet. Apparently that was called ‘airplane’.

It was so touching, and maybe even a little hot to see how good he was with her. At the same time, I found myself wondering if I’d ever done these things. I certainly didn’t remember. I'd had vague flashes of early memories from my childhood but not much beyond that. Most of what I recalled was from when I was living with the coven, only vaguely aware that people around me always seemed to get hurt in strange and mysterious ways.

Had I ever had a father to hold me on his shoulders? Had anyone ever played airplane with me?

I didn’t know.

It was a melancholy thought, but I didn’t let it get the best of me. The three of us ended up occupying ourselves with lots of laughter and silliness, right up until Mrs. Blair returned home to take the young girl to swimming lessons. We said goodbye, and once the humans were gone, Kai sidled up to me.

I could tell by his grin that he was about to be cheeky, but I still wasn’t ready for what he murmured into my ear.

“You know, if you want one of your own, I can help with that.”

I didn’t need a mirror to know that I was blushing crimson. I could feel it in how my cheeks burned.

“Wow, you really are a martyr, volunteering for the cause.”

He bowed, wiggling his eyebrows at me as he did. “I live to serve.”

“Uh-huh, practically a saint.”

“Saint or not, just give the word, and I’d be happy to do plenty of sinful things to make it happen.”

Rolling my eyes, I decided to work on my potions. If I kept flirting with Kai, I was going to end up in trouble.

But, boy, he really did make trouble seem like a lot of fun.

Chapter 15

Kai

I’d heard of baby fever before, but I’d really thought it was just a thing that happened to women when they saw an especially cute baby. Yet, seeing Ayla playing with the young Blair daughter, both of them pink-cheeked and laughing… well, I was ready to lay down and make a new little one right then and there.

Provided the daughter was actually out of the room, of course.

So, naturally, I'd flirted with Ayla about it, and maybe I was fishing a little, maybe I wasn’t. My inner wolf was certainly interested in her position on the matter.

While I hadn’t really gotten the best read on her, she hadn’t saidno. She’d just teased me back while blushing the most adorable shade of deep red I’d ever seen.
