“Well, once again, we owe a debt to all of you. You’re free to go. Thank you.”

“Thank you,” said Nine. They watched as the POTUS left with his security team, then stared at their attorneys. Kari frowned at them.

“Yeah. Let’s talk.”

CHAPTER EIGHTEEN

“Dad, what happened to ‘we’re just gonna question the man and put some pressure on him’?” frowned Cam.

“That’s all we did. He was the lunatic that ran,” said Nine. “We had no way of knowing he’d do that. Besides, now you just have to worry about Judge.”

“We’re trying to gather everything we need on him. I don’t want to use Harlow, but that may be our only option,” said Cam. Luke nodded at him.

“What else is going on?” he asked. “I can see it in your faces.”

“We think it’s more than just Judge. Somehow, the POTUS knows what’s happening here. I don’t think he turned over our names, but he’s involved. I just know it.”

The entire team met in the auditorium reviewing everything that happened, including the bombshell dropped by the feds and who they were working with.

“Do you trust that?” asked Eric, staring at the seniors.

“Fuck, no,” Miller growled at the room. Staring at his friends, he let out a long sigh. “I’m not sure. They seemed sincere in that they didn’t want anyone in our government getting control of any weapons manufacturing facilities. It makes sense. It wouldn’t bode well for any foreign enemy if they had total control of everything.”

“Well, we’ve got a dead justice and a JD attorney on the loose doing God knows what,” frowned Luke. There was a knock on the door, and Harlow entered, smiling at Nate. He stood, kissing his new wife, and pulled her beside him.

“Everything okay, Harlow?” asked Eric.

“I think you might want to turn on the press conference happening right now.”

The tech boys brought up the feed, placing it on the massive screen for all to see. Standing at a podium was the POTUS and beside him, Spencer Judge.

“The events of the last few days have rocked our nation and the Supreme Court of our fine land. However, we must move forward. While investigations are underway into the actions of Seth Morrison, this morning I made my recommendation for his replacement on the Court. Allow me to introduce to you, Spencer Judge. Spencer has served as a local district judge, and more recently, has been an invaluable member of the investigation team for the Justice Department. Spencer, I’ll let you take it from here.”

“This is a joke, right?” said Hex. “He knows that he’s fucking involved. Is this a case of keep your friends close and your enemies closer?”

“I don’t think so,” whispered Harlow, staring at the screen. The vision of her father standing at the podium sent chills up her spine.

“Mr. President, members of the press, I am honored that the president has recommended me to replace the seat of Seth Morrison. Justice Morrison and I were friends at one time. He’d been suffering since the death of his wife years ago, and I believe his mental health was fragile at best.”

“He’s covering his own tracks,” said Nate.

“I believe my record speaks for itself, and I know that with this administration, we will continue to do great things.”

“Mr. Judge, what about the rumors of your daughter’s disappearance?”

“My daughter, unfortunately, is also troubled. I hope that wherever she is, she finds peace. However, I do wish that she’d let her mother and I know that she’s safe. It would be my fondest wish to have her home where she belongs.”

“And what about the fire in your home? There were six safes in your home. Why does a man need six safes? And what about the room with all the locks?”

“The fire was a tragic accident. We believe it was an anomaly of gas and electrical issues. My wife and I are currently looking for a residence closer to Washington, D.C.”

“Mr. Judge, we’ve heard rumors that you will continue Justice Morrison’s drive to force American weapons manufacturers to be run by the government. Why would you do this? It serves no one other than government.”

“I believe that’s all the questions for now,”said the President. The men were rushed from the podium, leaving everyone screaming questions at their backs.

Nate looked at Harlow and realized that she was remarkably calm. He turned to Hex, Cam, Eric, and Luke, then looked back at his father, shrugging.

“Harlow? Honey, are you okay?” asked Hex.
