Page 41 of Unusual Noises

As soon as I entered the cabin, I saw Verity frantically pulling open every drawer and cabinet in the kitchenette area. She hadn’t even heard me open the door, that’s how engrossed she was in searching for whatever she was looking for.

“Baby?”

She whirled around, and her blue eyes looked wild and frightened. “Saint,” she cried out before running towards me.

I braced myself just in time to catch her. “Baby, what’s wrong?”

Verity looked up at me, and she looked really fucking terrified. “Lulee’s missing,” she blurted.

“What? What do you mean?”

“I mean, she could have gone off to look for Sarah, but I don’t think so,” she rambled on. “Plus, I don’t think that Sarah’s missing.”

“Verity, calm down,” I ordered, keeping my voice neutral. “What are you talking about?”

“They’re cameras,” she rushed out.

“What are cameras?” I asked, not following.

“That buzzing sound,” she said. “They’re cameras, Saint.”

Before I could ask any other questions, Verity was pulling on my hand, dragging me towards the kitchenette. I watched as she yanked some wire out of the partition, and when she handed it to me, I could see that it really was a camera.

What the fuck?

“I think that the buzzing noise was the camera rotating and adjusting,” she went on. “I also found them in Lulee and Cree’s cabin.”

I looked down at her. “Are you serious?”

She nodded. “There’s more.”

“Jesus Christ,” I swore. “Really?”

“When I went to check the other cabin for cameras, that’s when I couldn’t find Lulee anywhere,” she said, her eyes beginning to water. “So…so, thinking that she might have driven to the Clarks, I went to see if the car was still in the parking lot.”

“Was it?”

She nodded. “Yeah, but someone messed with it, Saint,” she rushed out, fresh dread etched all over her pretty face. “Someone popped the hood and removed some of the connecting lines.”

I grabbed her shoulders, dropping the camera. “What?”

“Saint, I don’t think that Sarah’s missing,” she choked out. “At least, not like we think she is.”

“And you can’t find Lulee anywhere?”

She shook her head. “As soon as I saw the car, I came back here to look for some weapons,” she said, her voice cracking. “I know that sounds stupid-”

“The fuck it does,” I told her. “That sounds exactly like something that we should do.”

“We need to find Lulee,” she said. “Saint, if anything happens-”

“Hey, let’s not go there, okay?” I insisted. “We need to go get Cree, then search every inch of this place. Knowing Lulee, she could have easily gone looking for Sarah herself. Hell, she might have even started walking to the Clarks since Cree has the keys to the car.”

“Saint-”

“Baby, I need you to keep it together for me, okay?” I demanded, knowing how unfair that was. Her best friend was missing, and we’d just found ourselves knee-deep in our own horror movie, so I knew that it was easier said than done. “Besides, I amnotgoing to let anything happen to you, Verity.” I cupped her face in my hands. “I’ll die before I let anyone hurt you.”

“I’m scared,” she admitted.
