“I’ll take you as far as you can go, then I’ll put your girl right back in your arms where she belongs, man,” I said, the weight of his loss really doing a number on all of us.

“If you can get me outside, that’s where I want to be,” he replied, and there wasn’t anything on earth that was going to stop me from getting Cree and Lulee outside.

Fifteen minutes later, Cree was sitting on one of the decorative benches that were positioned in front of the main entrance, Lulee’s body cradled in his arms. While he was no longer losing it, he was holding her like his love might be strong enough to bring her back to life. He was holding her like I’d probably be holding Verity had anything like this happened to her.

“Oh, God,” Verity cried out. “Sarah.”

“Shit,” I swore, floored by how we could have forgotten about her.

“You guys need to go check on her,” Cree said, probably recalling how Lulee had refused to leave without the girl. “We have to save her.”

I placed my hand on his shoulder. “We got her,” I promised. “Are you fine here?”

Cree nodded. “Yeah, man. Just hurry up and go get her.”

Without another word, Verity and I raced over towards the maintenance shop, and my heart felt like it was back in my throat when I started kicking the door in. While I hadn’t seen her, it’d be a damn miracle if she was still alive. After what Donovan had confessed about her condition, I could only pray that we found her in time. At least, for Cree’s sake.

Chapter 28

Verity~

Ihad no idea how I was still functioning. I had no idea how I wasn’t a ruined mess next to Cree. My best friend was dead, I had just killed two people, and I wanted to kill another. I was feeling such an onslaught of emotions that I wasn’t even sure how I was still standing. I was experiencing such mental and emotional anguish that I felt useless; a slave to emotions that I couldn’t even identify anymore.

As soon as the wood splintered into broken slats, Saint raced inside, and I was hot on his heels. Sarah was laying unmoving in the middle of the floor, and she was so bloody and beaten that I was terrified to touch her.

“Motherfucker,” Saint hissed as we kneeled down next to her.

Sarah was faced down on the concrete floor, and her auburn-colored hair was so saturated in blood that it looked brown. I knew that head wounds bled a lot, but Sarah was bleeding enough to make me pull out my phone and dial 911 again.

As soon as the operator answered, I said, “I’m calling again from Amity Expectations Resort. We need two ambulances, and we needed them hours ago. Please hurry!” I hung up, tears filling my eyes again.

Saint placed two of his fingers on the side of Sarah’s neck, and the air in my lungs froze as I waited for him to tell me if she was alive or not. While I knew that Sarah would never be the same again, the thought of losing her was unacceptable. Lulee had wanted her saved, and Cree needed to feel like he had saved at least one person.

“I feel a pulse, though it’s faint,” Saint said, and I could feel my entire body sag with relief.

As I glanced down at her body, I had to bite my lip to keep from falling apart and making this all about me. I knew that if I lost it, Saint would make me his priority, and I couldn’t do that to Sarah. No matter my mental and emotional trauma, I was fine physically, and that made the girl in front of me more important at the moment.

Nevertheless, bile threatened to make an appearance again when I saw all the blood pooled between her legs. Donovan had mentioned her being torn to pieces, and I wasn’t sure if I’d ever be able to forgive Saint for not letting me kill him.

Still, it wasn’t just the pools of blood around her naked body that were threatening to undo me. Both of her ankles were twisted, causing both of her feet to point in odd directions, and she looked to have a broken rib practically protruding from her left side. The rest of her was beaten raw, and my eyes started to water with the pain that she was going to experience when the EMTs moved her body.

“Saint…” I choked out.

“I know, baby,” he said softly before leaning down to get a better look at Sarah’s face. Tears started streaming down my cheeks as I watched him use the utmost care to brush some of her hair back from her face. It was like he knew that even her hair might hurt with all that had been done to her.

“Should we cover her up?”

Saint shook his head. “The less that we disturb, the better.”

“She might be cold,” I said achingly.

Saint’s brown eyes shot my way. “Baby, it’s not cold.”

“But…but she might be cold,” I argued.

His face softening, he leaned back down to look at Sarah. “Sarah?” he whispered. “Sarah, can you hear me?” Saint pushed her hair back again. “We called the police, Sarah. We just need you to hold on for a little longer, okay? The police are on their way, and we just…we just need you to stay with us.”

“K…vin…” she mumbled incoherently, but we both knew what she was asking, and I dropped on my ass, covering my mouth, so that she couldn’t hear the answer that she didn’t need to hear right now.
