“We need to get him to a hospital,” the paramedic said, her voice soft with understanding.

I looked back at Cree. “We’ll be there as soon as we can, okay?”

He nodded. “I’m going to call my parents as soon as I get service. Do you want me to call yours?”

“No,” I sighed. “They’ll freak out if I’m not on the phone to answer questions for them. Just…get to the hospital and concentrate on that leg of yours. We’ll be there as soon as we can. Cree.”

“I…” He let out a shaky breath. “I need to call her parents, Saint.” His words felt like a punch in the chest, but that reality hadn’t even crossed my mind throughout all this. “How do I tell her parents that I couldn’t keep her safe? How do I…”

I had no answer for that.

“We need to go,” the other paramedic said. “I’m sorry, but…but if there’s any chance of saving that knee, we need to get going.”

I wrapped my hand around Cree’s arm. “We’ll get through this, man. I promise.”

Without another word, the EMTs got Cree situated on the stretcher, taking him away, leaving me and Verity to try to explain this fucking mess.

“Mr. Hendrix?” I turned at my name. “I’m Officer Chelsea. That young lady over there told me that your name is Saint Hendrix.”

I nodded. “That’s me.”

Before the officer could say anything else, the other EMTs were rolling Sarah past us, and I could only pray that they had given her something for the pain before attempting to place her on that stretcher. She was also covered in a blanket, and I was grateful for that simply for Verity’s mental sake if nothing else. For whatever reason, that blanket was important.

“Do you know if they’re going to the same hospital?” I asked.

“Yes,” the officer answered. “They may be transferred upon their initial assessment, but for now, they’ll be transported to the nearest hospital.”

Just then, a handcuffed and screaming Donovan was being escorted by two other officers. “I didn’t do anything! It was them! They killed my parents! They’re the ones that killed everyone!” He was fighting against his handcuffs as the officers dragged him along. “It wasn’t me! It wasn’t me!”

“We got some initial accounts from the other gentleman and the young lady talking with Officer Montreal, but what can you tell me about what happened here tonight?”

Letting out a deep sigh, I told him everything. I started from when we first showed up, Marilyn immediately showing her disapproval for Lulee, and I didn’t stop until I got to the part where the other officer had found me in the shed with Sarah. I left nothing out, not even how Verity had killed both Marilyn and Richard. Sure, I had retold the tale to make sure that he understood how everything had been self-defense on our part, but I’d stuck as close as possible to the truth. Not knowing what all Verity and Cree had already told them, I knew that it wasn’t in our best interest to leave anything out.

When I was done, he said, “That’s pretty much what they said.”

I closed my eyes in relief.

Before anymore could be said, another officer joined us. “Four other dead bodies in the kitchen storage,” he stated evenly.

“According to our witnesses, they should be the bodies of Marilyn Clark, Richard Clark, Kevin Meyers, and Trevor Bison,” Officer Chelsea told him.

“Can I go check on my girlfriend?” I asked, not really caring if I was being rude or disrespectful.

Officer Chelsea looked back at me. “I’ll have someone escort you to get your wallet, purse, things like that, and then you’re going to have to come with us to the station for an official statement.”

“I figured,” I sighed.

Taking pity on me, he said, “As horrible as this all feels right now, it could be worse, kid. You couldnotbe coming with us back to the station.”

He had me there.

Chapter 30

Verity~

Walking into the cabin, everything looked different than it’d had when we’d first gotten here. Even though the room looked exactly the same, apart from the cameras that I had ripped out of the walls, nothing would ever look the same again;lifewould never look the same again.

After questioning me, Cree, and Saint, the police had graciously allowed me and Saint to grab our stuff from the room, my purse being the only thing that I really needed. I really couldn’t care about anything else in the room, and I honestly had no idea how I’d feel about taking it back home with me.
