Verity burrowed herself deeper in my arms, and they automatically tightened around her. I knew for a fact that Cree was always going to blame himself for not keeping Lulee safe, and I just knew that wasn’t anything that I’d ever be able to live with. Right now, he was a far stronger man than I was, and I had no idea how he did it. Even Donovan getting the death penalty hadn’t brought any real closure.
“Okay,” Verity finally whispered. “I’ll marry you.”
“Thank fuck,” I rushed out, my chest loosening with relief.
After a second, she said, “The pain isn’t ever going to go away, Saint.”
“No, baby,” I whispered. “It’s not.”
She let out a dark laugh. “Ironically, Lulee would be cussing us all out for mourning her right now.”
“Yeah,” I chuckled softly. “She was more about celebrating life than mourning it.”
“I want to be able to celebrate her one day,” she said solemnly. “One day, I want to be able to do that for her.”
“One day, we will,” I vowed. “I promise, baby.”
The End.
