The ring did fit perfectly on my finger.

“It’s huge, Carlo.” I held my hand up in front of me and took in the pure beauty of it. “Just like you.”

He laughed, and that distracted me for a minute. “What? I’m serious. You are huge, but also everything about you is huge.”

That only made him laugh louder.

I rolled my eyes and said, “You know what I mean. Everything you do is—big.”

His arm slid behind my back, and he kissed my neck. “You deserve the best, Giselle. And this ring is the best.”

I moved my hand this way and that, loving it more and more with each look. “Too bad it’s not real,” I said under my breath before I realized what I’d said.

“What? It’s real. Do you want me to take you to a jeweler to prove it?” Carlo was clearly offended.

Crap.

“No, that’s not what I meant.” I peered up at him.

His brows furrowed together. “Then what did you mean?”

I looked at the prettiest ring that had ever been on my finger—that would ever be on my finger, and said, “I mean it’s too bad that it’s not for a real engagement. That’s all.”

There was dead silence for a long moment.

And then there wasn’t.

Carlo’s body turned completely to me now. His hands landed on my shoulders, and he said, “This is real, Giselle. What we have, it’s real.”

My heart exploded again.

“You’re wearing my ring on your finger. And soon, you’ll have my baby inside of you. All of this is real, Giselle. I assure you.” His grip on me increased and part of me wanted to run out of the limo. And part of me wanted to kiss him and rip his tux off.

“Carlo,” was all I could say. His words were too—much.

“I love you. And I’m going to do everything I can to show you that.”

I felt emotion clog my throat, and tears threaten behind my eyes—but I was determined not to cry. Eve had spent forever getting my makeup just right. He lifted my chin with his finger. His eyes held mine.

And then he kissed me.

Long and hard.

And when he was done—my entire body tingled.

After that, he pulled me into his side, and we sat like that.

My hand in his.

And I let my brain pretend that this was real.

Because soon enough, it wouldn’t be.

Giselle

We must’ve been driving for a good half an hour before I asked, “How much longer until we’re there?” I wondered as the city came into view.
