I nodded because after all, he was the boss. Although I really wanted to shower and clean myself up for him—I also wanted to wallow for as long as humanly possible.

His lips found my forehead again before he pushed up and strode out the door.

I hadn’t paid toomuch attention to how long Nick had been gone for. But the movie I’d been watching ended and I was at least twenty minutes into the next one. A sharp knock sounded, and my eyes darted to the door as it opened.

Nick walked in, holding a silver tray.

He shut the door with his foot, and that was when I noticed he’d showered and changed. The ends of his dark hair looked wet—I loved running my fingers through his hair after he got out of the shower.

I sat up while he set the tray down on the bed and ambled in beside me. “Why aren’t you watching that on the TV?” he asked, staring at my phone.

I lifted it up, the movie still playing. “I couldn’t figure out the remotes, so I gave up.” I sighed and put the show on pause.

Nick smirked at me and picked up the three remotes. He pressed what seemed like a ridiculous number of buttons, but eventually, the TV came to life. Then he slid the phone out of my hand, touched the screen andvoila, the movie popped up on the TV.

I gasped and took my phone back. “It’s a miracle. I must’ve spent an hour trying to figure that out.” And that was the truth. I’d contemplated chucking the remotes into the fireplace, but decided against it.

“I’ll teach you. First, you need to eat,” he said, lifting the silver cover off a bowl. A lovely smell rose up with the steam. He picked up the bowl and a spoon, leaning back against the headboard with me. After dipping the spoon into what looked like soup, he blew gently on the liquid. “One taste, please?” he asked, his eyes full of something I hadn’t seen from him before.

It did smell delicious. I leaned my head over the bowl and let him feed me the broth off the spoon. “Mmm, that is so good,” I said, letting the savory liquid travel down my throat.

“More?” he asked, his voice a higher pitch as he spoke.

I nodded, making him smile slightly.

He continued feeding me like that for a while, even after I reached for the bowl myself. All he did was shake his head, frown, and keep blowing on each spoonful before he let me eat it.

The entire act of what he was doing, filled not only my belly—but also my soul.

A few times, I felt my eyes well up with his display of kindness. I couldn’t remember the last time anyone had done something nice for me.

And that was exactly what this felt like.

After I’d finished the bowl, Nick set the tray on my lap before he fluffed up a pillow and laid down. Surprisingly, I ate nearly everything else on the tray. The fruit was ripe and perfect. I couldn’t down the ice water or the juice fast enough.

When I finished, Nick picked up the tray and set it outside the door.

As he climbed back into bed, he said, “Now tell me what happened.”

“What happened where?” I asked, looking down into his devastatingly handsome face.

“Today. The reason you’re upset and came home empty handed.”

“Oh,” I said, barely above a whisper. “Umm—I didn’t have much luck with shopping.”

His lips flattened out and his eyes narrowed on mine. “Langcaster informed me of that. I’d like to know exactly what happened. Straight from your beautiful mouth.” His index finger traced over my bottom lip.

Obviously Langcaster had tattled on me. I’d have to just lay it all out for Nick. So, I straightened my spine and gave him what he’d asked for. “What happened was—nobody wanted to serve me. Therefore, I came home without anything.”

“Why did they not want to serve you?”

“Umm, maybe because they don’t want a hooker shopping with their high-class clientele? Haven’t you seen that movie, Nick?” I asked, feeling my heart start beating faster in frustration.

He frowned deeply now, the two lines between his eyebrows deepening. “That’s fiction. And don’t youevercall yourself that again, do you hear me?”

“It’s what I am.”

“Cherry—” He sat up with a loud huff, “goddamn it, you need to tell me your real name.” He sounded beyond annoyed now. “Do not call yourself that.”
