“I already feel good,” I said, lifting her hand to my mouth. I placed a kiss inside her palm. “Now, let’s eat.”

“So, you cried because of the bitchy store people and then again at the zoo?” Giselle asked loudly while we video chatted.

Nick already left for the office with instructions for me to do whatever I wanted at his house until I heard from him.

This was not a problem.

First, I laid in bed for an hour, reading a romance novel I found in the library across the hall. Then, I put on a swimsuit, did laps, and practiced some dives, before I sat down on a lounge chair to dry off.

Langcaster had come out with fruit and cottage cheese for me—which I gobbled down in no time. I sat in the warm, morning sun for a while, drinking my orange juice—freshly squeezed—and enjoying the quiet.

This was not something I was ever allowed to do back home.

For one thing, our house was always noisy. Something or someone inevitably disturbed any silence I found.

Secondly, the only pool we had at home was in the backyard after the snow melted. And that was more of a giant mudpuddle than anything else.

And lastly, cottage cheese was expensive when you were trying to feed your family on a dime. So was prime fruit. The only produce I bought was bruised or already half brown.

Finally, the guilt set in, and I made my way up to my room to call Giselle and see how things were going. Apparently, everyone’s legs and arms were still attached, so, I considered that a win.

That brought us to now.

I’d given her the lowdown on my first days here—the good, the bad, and the awkward.

“Pretty much, yeah,” I answered, lying back on my pillows. Someone had come in and tidied up the room while I was outside. It felt so luxurious to come back into a spotless bedroom and bathroom.

Giselle giggled. “You’re such a sap about the zoo. What did Nick say when you started crying?”

My eyes gazed out the window for a second. “Not much,” I said, still thinking about what Nick had done, “he hugged me and whisked me back to his house—or should I say, mansion?”

“Is it wonderful? How many bedrooms are there?”

“Tons. Too many to count. And the pool outside is huge. He’s got a driver basically on call every second of the day or night, and house staff are always puttering around. It’s crazy,” I whispered and looked at the door to make sure it was still shut.

“Ohh, that sounds fantastic,” Giselle squealed with a big smile on her face. Her voice lowered and she got closer to the screen. “And how’s the—you know—sex? Are you constantly on call just like the driver?” she asked with a low laugh.

I bit my bottom lip as my stomach twisted. “Uh, not exactly,” I told her, feeling embarrassed at the fact that Nick hadn’t instigated sex even once since I’d been here. “We haven’t been together like that yet. He actually turned me down yesterday when I suggested it.”

Giselle’s jaw went slack, and she stared at me for a good, solid minute before she spoke again, “Let me get this straight. The man buys you for a month of all access all the time fun—but he hasn’t jumped you? You’re joking, right?” Her voice went up with a loud inflection on the last word.

I shook my head as I rolled on my side. “Nope. Should I be worried?” I asked, mostly because I was worried. Nick had already paid me for the first week. However, I hadn’t actuallydoneanything for him.

Other than cry and cause a fuss, that is.

“I don’t understand this at all. He was all over you whenever you were at the hotel? And now you’ve been in his bed—in his own house—for two nights but he hasn’t laid a finger on you?”

I let out a loud, exaggerated sigh and tossed around to my other side. “I should worry, right?”

My heart started beating faster.

The anxious alarm I’d been holding at bay now had the permission to escape. Seeing and hearing Giselle’s reaction only solidified my fears.

“Hmm, I don’t know,” she answered, her forehead crinkled into a frown. “Have you been doing everything in your power to—”
