At any rate, our first stop was upon us, and I held the huge door open for her. “Ladies first,” I said, briefly gazing into her still smiling face. She hurried briskly past me and out of the wind.

We stared at the enormous, colorful stained glass that greeted us on our entry. Incidentally, Cherry knew umpteen facts about it and shared her knowledge with me instantly.

Hearing her speak about something she was passionate about made my heart nearly explode. Her cheeks were rosy and slightly flushed as she animatedly explained the origin of the piece we stood in front of.

I don’t know when I’d last been more captivated by anyone or anything.

When her delicate hand reached down for mine, my heart gave an extra fast beat.

And that’s how it was for the next hour and a half.

She guided me through the museum.

Sometimes she was excited and talkative.

Other times she was quiet and introspective.

Everything she did—every mood she exhibited—I soaked in through my pores like a dry sponge.

When she had finished touring us around, she turned to me. “What do you want to do now?” Her hands squeezed mine while she smiled up at me.

My fingers itched to touch her face.

So, I did.

“No, you’re planning our day, remember?” I said, letting my fingers drift through her golden locks. Her hair was soft and silky, and I was close enough to smell the delicious vanilla scent of her shampoo.

“You can pick what we do next.”

I let out a low chuckle. “No, you are in charge of our day.”

She sucked her lips into her mouth for a second, then said, “I’m hungry.”

“Then let’s eat.”

I toldher we could call Langcaster, and he would take us wherever she pleased. Instead, she typed away on her phone and announced that some of her favorite food trucks were nearby.

A couple of blocks later, we’d arrived at a grouping of several parked trucks.

Everything from tacos to cupcakes.

I followed along and ordered whatever she did. Including the absolutely delicious, decadent, chocolate crepes we were currently eating now.

The fall-off-the-bone ribs had been incredible.

But the taste of the cool, sweet cream inside the thin crepe, topped with chocolate was Heaven. “How did I not know these existed?” I asked, taking another bite of the desert.

Cherry held one roll to her lips and answered, “It’s been so long since I’ve eaten here.” Her eyebrows furrowed as she bit into the crepe. “Hmm,” she said, chewing and swallowing, “I can’t even remember the last time.”

“Isn’t this one of your favorite things to do?” I questioned, confused at why she didn’t know when she’d last been here.

She nodded her head and wiped her bottom lip. “It is.”

“Then why don’t you eat here often?”

A loud, snarky laugh came out of her mouth. “Because—life, Nick,” she said, her eyes getting a bit watery. “Because life,” she repeated more quietly now, and I didn’t like that. Her somber tone made my stomach twist.

“You should make time to do these things,” I said before taking a large gulp of the coffee I’d bought—which incidentally was also fabulous.
