“I was busy. What’s up?”

“What’s up? What’s up? What’s up is that Castaneda’s plane was seen leaving the airport in Mexico.”

I huffed out a loud sigh. “Anyone see who was on it?”

“Nothing definite but a few reports of a hot blonde.”

I chuckled and leaned against the back of my chair. “Nothing unusual about that.” And there definitely wasn’t. Maxim Castaneda was a ladies’ man, no matter that rumor had it he was newly married. “Anyone see him?”

“Not yet, but apparently it was foggy and difficult to see. They wanted to send word.”

I nodded and pulled the chair out, its legs screeching on the floor. Once I sat down, I said, “That’s good. Keep me updated on where it lands.”

“There’s more.”

“What is it, Joey? I’ve got a warm bed to go back to if you know what I mean. Hurry up,” I scolded him, showing my frustration.

“We found one of Castaneda’s crew snooping around your territory.”

Nice. Just what I fucking needed.

“You sure it’s one of his guys?” I asked, needing this like I needed another hole in the head.

“Yeah, boss. No doubt.”

I let my head fall forward as I raked my hand through my hair. “Get rid of him,” I ordered, glad I didn’t have to deal with this kind of shit very often.

That’s what I had these guys for.

To do my dirty work, so I didn’t have to.

“You sure?”

“Why would I not be sure? I just told you what to do. Now do it!” I raised my voice to get my point across.

“Okay, okay, I’ll pass along the message.”

“Is there anything more?”

Of course, there was more.

There was always more.

Nothing that they couldn’t handle without me, though. And I told him as much before I hung up and stomped back upstairs.

Oddly, my bedroom door was open.

I frowned and set my hand on the doorknob and pushed it open the rest of the way.

My bed was empty.

No Eve.

My pulse quickened as I rushed toward the bathroom. I turned on the light, but it was exactly how I’d left it.

Panic set into my entire body as I tore out of my room and down the stairs. When I came down to the landing, I saw a light on down the hall.

Eve’s room.
