Smart girl.

The same was true of Eve’s sister, Rachel. I guessed she was sixteen, or close to it. And that kid didn’t trust me as far as she could throw me.

Smart kid.

Beatrice, however, seemed to take a liking to me sheerly for the reason that I’d okayed the ginormous strawberry pancakes she wanted. She’d announced in the vehicle on the way over, that she had just turned ten years old last month.

That kid was far too trusting.

But I had to admit I enjoyed her openness. We’d have to work on that, though. For her own good.

I’d ordered coffee and a side of eggs and bacon.

Eve said she wasn’t hungry, but I suggested it was likely going to be a long day and she needed to eat.

Her friend, Giselle—the hot, stacked brunette—agreed with me, although somewhat reluctantly. I couldn’t be sure without asking, but I’d bet she knew the true nature of my relationship with Eve.

I found that interesting and wondered if I were in Eve’s spot, if I’d have the nerve to tell anyone—especially someone I was close to—that I slept with strangers for money.

“How are your pancakes?” I asked, Beatrice, her cute face smiled at me through a whipped cream haze.

“Good,” she mumbled out as she chewed, then gave me a thumbs up.

“What about your pancakes, Rachel? Are they good as well?” I asked, then took a sip of coffee. It wouldn’t be my last cup, that I knew for sure. After staying up all night, plenty of caffeine would be needed today.

Rachel glared up at me and said, “Umm, they’re pancakes?” Her tone was what I imagined a typical teenager’s to be. And since she was a teenager, I suppose it was normal.

Annoying as hell.

But normal.

“Rachel,” Eve said, sounding irritated by her sister’s attitude.

“Ow, Evie,” Rachel said, moving her hand under the table. “Why’d you kick me?”

Eve stared at her sister with what I could only describe as her evil eye. “We can’t have one meal without your mouth deciding to make an appearance?”

Rachel rolled her eyes and shook her head. “My pancakes are the best in the whole world, Nick. How can we ever thank you for buying us breakfast?” Her tone was robotic and so beyond sarcastic that I couldn’t stop myself from laughing.

“Ow, dammit, Evie, stop it,” Rachel said after Eve presumably kicked her again.

“That was me this time,” Beatrice looked over at her sister with a huge smile on her face.

“Thanks, Bea, you saved me the trouble,” Eve said with a smirk.

“You’re welcome,” Beatrice said, and that made us all laugh. Except for Rachel.

Giselle started filling Eve in on some neighborhood gossip. The baby started banging her hands on the table, then in Giselle’s plate. “Oh, for Pete sakes,” Giselle said, pushing her plate away and trying to wipe off the baby’s hands.

“Here, let me,” Eve said, using her napkin and cleaning the tiny flailing fists. When she was satisfied, she scooped up the baby and said, “Let your mommy eat, you goof.” Then she kissed Dani’s fat little cheeks.

The feeling that shot through me as I watched Eve with the baby—I could not describe.

I’d seen Eve with the baby when I first arrived at her house.

But then, my feeling was anger.

I was more than ready to hunt down the asshole who’d gotten her pregnant.
