Her eyes scanned my face. “What if I told you I think you’re full of shit?”

My eyes didn’t leave hers. “Then I’d say you were an extremely smart, young woman. You should always be cautious of people you don’t know. And the fact that you’re so protective of your sister only says good things about you.”

Her face went blank before she went back to her pancakes.

Then I continued bargaining with the baby.

Eve

Nick had insisted on driving us to the pancake house. Giselle had taken her own car.

We dropped off Beatrice at the elementary school, then Rachel at high school. After that, I used my phone to call the school and tell them that Asher was sick and wouldn’t be in today and maybe not tomorrow either.

They didn’t give me any grief, so at least that was one thing to be thankful for.

When Nick drove in behind my car on the driveway, I undid my seat belt and turned to him. “Thank you for your help with Asher. And for taking everyone out for breakfast. It made a shitty day less shitty,” I said, placing my hand on his arm.

I really was grateful that he’d been there for me—for us.

I was already missing him, and he wasn’t even gone yet.

“You’re welcome. I’m glad I could help.” His sparkling eyes gazed into mine and I couldn’t help but lean forward and kiss him. He accepted the kiss more than willingly, setting his hands on my face and cupping it gently.

He teased my lips with his tongue, and I opened for him, wanting to feel him kiss me deeply one more time before he left. My tongue touched his and I groaned. Then he let out a sexy sigh as he kissed me harder.

I let my hands find his shoulders, then traveled up into his thick, soft hair. I pulled it a bit roughly between my fingers, loving the feel.

After a few minutes, I finally pulled away, both of us breathless after that goodbye kiss. “Thanks, Nick,” I said, feeling tears creep up behind my eyes. I needed to get out of the car before I started crying.

I opened my door and slid out, not looking back.

Because if I did, I knew I’d run straight into his arms and beg him not to go.

I pulled the keys out of my purse and found the right one for the door. When I stuck it in and twisted, I sniffled a bit, thinking what a raw deal this was.

What I wouldn’t give to spend the rest of the month at Nick’s place and not have to deal with real life.

I shut the door behind me—but, for some reason it didn’t close. “What the—” I said, spinning around and getting the fright of my life. My hand went straight to my chest, and I hollered, “Why are you—oh my gosh, you scared me to death!”

Nick simply set his hand on my hip and pushed me forward while he walked into my house. “Nick! What are you doing?” I shouted, frowning at him as he shut and locked the door.

“I’m coming inside, Miss Hayward. What do you think I’m doing?” he asked, his voice sounding exasperated with me.

My heart gave a sudden twist when he’d said my last name—for the first time. “You dropped me off. I thanked you. This,” I said, moving my hand back and forth between us, “is over. We are done. I’ll give you your money back.”

His face changed back to menacing and he stormed toward me so quickly I had no choice but to back up. Once I hit the wall and couldn’t move anymore, he caged me in with his body. “We are not done until I say we’re done.”

I somehow lost every bit of air in my lungs after I said, “Nick, this is over.”

“It’s not fucking over,” he grunted out before his lips crashed down onto mine. Oh man, I was equal parts disturbed and relieved.

Disturbed because our agreement was officially over. We should not be doing this.

And relieved because I craved him like this—angry, aggressive, and starving.

For me.
