I walked around with her in my arms. Sometimes holding her facing me. Other times, facing the world.

She appeared to enjoy both.

But not for long.

So, I had to keep moving and guessing what she wanted. When she got tired of one position, she’d begin to squirm and fuss. Then, I’d switch something, and she’d be happy for a little while again.

I heard my phone go off in my pocket, so I held Daniella close while I answered. “Yeah,” I said into the phone.

“A delivery for Mr. Rosetti,” the man on the other end of the phone said.

“Perfect, I’ll open the door.” I clicked off my phone and carried the baby with me. When I opened the door, I spotted a woman coming up the lawn with a clipboard.

“You’re Rosetti?” she asked unceremoniously, shoving the board at me. A pen was stuck on the side. I reached out for the clipboard, then soon realized I was out of hands.

“Yes, uh, do you think you could assist? My partner hasn’t learned to write yet,” I said, making the woman laugh.

She pulled the board from me and unhooked the pen. “No problem. And how are you today?” she asked Daniella in a high-pitched voice while she handed me the pen.

I quickly signed and said, “She’s intent on ruining her mother’s supper. Otherwise, things are going quite well.” I returned the pen and the woman asked for instructions. Which I gave her immediately.

“Who’s that?” Eve said, coming up behind us just as the woman turned to go back to the truck.

I walked back into the kitchen instead of answering. “Girls, I ordered you all new beds. Can you please take the sheets off your old beds and tell the movers where to put your new ones? And do Asher’s bed too, will you?” I instructed.

After they displayed a short look of shock on their faces, they both dropped their cutlery and raced upstairs.

“What did you do?” Eve asked with a tone of exasperation. “They don’t need new beds.”

I raised my eyebrows at her and lowered my chin. “After this afternoon, I’d say you definitely need a new bed.” I heard Giselle let out a strangled laugh. “And I can’t just buy you one and nobody else now, can I?”

Eve’s mouth opened, but she remained silent.

The movers started coming in with the beds. Rachel and Beatrice were so excited it was a joy to watch.

After a while, Giselle finished eating and took a very fussy Daniella away from me. Then she sat down on the couch and breastfed the baby, which quieted her down in an instant.

I’d seen women on television feed their babies, but I couldn’t remember ever seeing that in person.

It really was a truly beautiful sight, how the baby gazed up into her mother’s eyes and vice versa. Giselle held Daniella’s little hand with hers and talked in a low, loving voice.

“Bedroom furniture, too?” Eve yelled, throwing her hands up. “Are you kidding me?” She turned to me, her mouth wide open.

“Well, they come as a matching set. What did you expect me to do?” I answered, trying to make it sound as logical as possible.

Eve rolled those beautiful eyes of hers again. “They do not. Beds are one thing, but new furniture is something completely different. That’s too much. We can’t accept it.”

The girls were on the top of the stairs, hearing all of this. “What? No, please, we want the nice, new stuff!” Beatrice shouted, nearly in tears.

“Yeah, it’s a gift. Why can’t Nick give us a gift? He’s your boyfriend, right?” Rachel said, narrowing her eyes on her older sister.

Eve let out a loud huff. “Because this is way too much money for him to spend on us. And we already have perfectly good bedroom furniture.”

“It’s crap that Mom and Dad found in the back alley,” Rachel stated, glaring even harder at Eve now.

“Ugh, you’re all driving me crazy!” Eve said, then rushed out the front door right before another dresser was being carried in.

I looked down at Giselle, still feeding the baby. Daniella seemed completely oblivious to the goings on around her. “Should I go after her?” I asked, completely stumped. I really wasn’t sure what I should do right now.
