Page 3 of A Billion Secrets

Not only was my month in a mansion with a hot billionaire over, but I also had messed up getting the giant payday at the end. Half the money Nick had already paid me, I’d have to return seeing as I didn’t even last a week there.

I let out a sigh and closed my eyes.

Asher had gotten himself into a huge amount of trouble.

Again.

When bail was set, that didn’t necessarily mean I’d be able to pay it.

My stomach twisted and turned inside me, and I felt another jolt of fear and queasiness wash over me.

“Nick,” I heard a man say in front of us right before Nick stood and shook his hand.

“Thanks for coming down so quickly. This is Eve, my—girlfriend,” he said, and the man reached out to shake my hand next. He was an older man, probably close to sixty.

His suit wasn’t as nice as what Nick normally wore, but it was still really nice. I shook his hand as Nick said, “Eve, this is Len.”

“Hi, nice to meet you,” I said, my voice barely registering. I felt so small and overwhelmed.

“You, too, Eve,” he said, shooting me a smile that didn’t meet his eyes. Then he looked at Nick and said, “A moment?”

“Yeah,” Nick said, looking down at me. “I’ll be right back. Don’t move.” And with that, he strode off with Len.

They talked in whispered tones, Len nodding often with a serious look on his face. They shook hands again and Nick headed back toward me.

“You want anything? I can grab a drink at the vending machine?”

He looked so handsome in his white, long-sleeved shirt and slacks.

So much more sophisticated than how I was dressed. I suddenly felt even more self conscious. “No, I’m fine, thanks anyway.”

His eyes raked over me once before he turned and walked away.

Len was busy at the counter. Lieutenant Nichols was now flanked by two male officers, and they were all in some kind of heated discussion.

Each time one of the officers spoke, Len would reply right back, speaking overtop of them.

I closed my eyes and prayed he’d be more successful than I’d been.

“Here,” Nick said, making me gaze up at him. He held out a bottle of water and something pink in his hand.

I gratefully took the water, suddenly feeling quite thirsty. Then Nick handed me a pack of gum.

Cherry gum.

The kind I was addicted to.

“Oh, thanks.” The water felt cool and cleansing going down. I hadn’t paid attention to how thirsty I was. By the time I took a breath, three quarters of it was gone.

When I stuffed a piece of gum in my mouth, my shoulders began to relax.

Nick sat beside me with a cup of coffee in his hand. He’d taken a few sips and made a face each time.

At first, I’d thought it was too hot. Then I guessed it probably wasn’t up to Nick’s high standards.

“Not good enough for you?” I asked, surprised to hear a note of teasing in my voice.

Nick’s head twisted to me, and he shook it back and forth. “Nope. It’s like swill.”
