My heart cracked open, and I felt like I was falling. He got so close to me now that I couldn’t keep his face in focus. “But I will kill every one of those bastards,” he said into my ear, and I shivered from his words. “You’re mine!”

I pushed him back trying to get some room between us. My mind was stuck with what to do. “Stop talking like that,” I mumbled out, wondering what kind of madman was standing in front of me.

“I want to know why you did it, but to tell you the truth, Eve, I really don’t give a shit. It doesn’t matter. Whatever bullshit you pull, it doesn’t matter because you,” he pressed his finger into my chest, “belong to me.”

He was breathing heavier now, and all I wanted to do was escape.

“I’m not yours. You can’t buy me, Nick,” I said, trying to keep my composure even though I was quickly losing that battle.

His eyes wouldn’t let mine go. “Everyone can be bought. Especially,” he said, talking into my ear, “you.” He backed up and turned around, and I thought—I hoped—he was done and would let me go.

He bent down and scooped up my purse. I thought maybe he’d give it back to me and take me home.

Nope.

Instead, he opened it and took out the roll of money Javier had given me. “You can’t be bought?” he asked, cocking his head to the side like a real jerk. Then he started flinging bills around him in the air. “This,” he said, continuing to throw the money, “looks like you can be bought.”

My heart broke in half at his words.

Yes, I slept with men for money.

But Nick had never made me feel dirty about it.

Until now.

I could feel tears start to form behind my eyes. “That’s right, Nick. I’m a whore. I fuck men for money. It’s my only talent, so why not use it, right?” The burn got stronger, and I nearly started crying.

“You’re so much better than this shit!” he screamed, tossing the rest of the bills on the floor. “Why? Why would you go back to this when I just sent you a month’s worth of money?” His arm flew up in a rage.

I yelled back at him, “That’syourmoney. It’s not mine, I didn’t work for it.”

“You more than earned it.”

“I didn’t, and you know it. I don’t take charity, either. You can take back the bedroom sets, too. Nobody asked you to buy all that,” I said, wiping away a few tears that had escaped. “I can take care of my family. I don’t need anyone’s help.”

“There was nothing charitable about the bedroom sets. Let me assure you,” he said, stepping in my direction. “That was purely selfish. I wanted to be able to fuck you without alerting the entire household.” His voice was more even—more controlled now.

And I didn’t know why that pissed me off, but it did.

“You won’t have to worry about that, because you won’t be at my house,” I said, sniffling once and wiping my eyes again.

“Yeah, I will. If you’re there, I’ll be there.”

My chest burned just as much as my eyes did.

I shut my eyes and shook my head, not understanding his logic.

At all.

He’d essentially caught me with my pants down with another man. And minutes later, he was insisting we were together. When nothing could be further from the truth.

“Why are you acting like this? We’re from different worlds. You had your fun. Now it’s time to let me go,” I said, my voice hitching at the end, unable to stop myself from crying.

Nick stormed back to me, his hands on my shoulders, holding me firmly. “I’m never letting you go, Eve. You’re mine. I’ve already told you that.”

“I can’t do this,” I said, covering my face with my hands. “I can’t do this.”

“You have to. There’s no choice.”
