“Join the club, we’d like to know that too.” He wasn’t about to give away the ME’s theory of how Starkey had been killed. For one thing, there were always expert opinions that would try to sway a jury one way or the other.

But more importantly, Banner and Perkins should do their own legwork.

“Okay, we’ll arrange a meeting.” Banner’s concession caught him off guard.

“When?” He glanced at his watch. Getting to Chicago or bringing Feldman here would take at least two hours if not more.

“Tomorrow late morning. I’ll let you know the details later.”

“Fine.” He ended the call.

“He agreed?” Harper sounded surprised.

“Yeah.” The barbecued chicken swirled in his gut. He didn’t like it. And he found himself hoping and praying something would happen between now and the morning to prevent this meeting from taking place.

CHAPTERELEVEN

Even though it had been her idea to meet with Jake, a shiver of apprehension slid down her spine. Harper told herself to get over it. She would face her ex multiple times if that would help them figure out who was trying to frame her.

“There’s still time for you to change your mind,” Steele said.

She managed a smile. “I won’t. Thanks for arranging it.”

“Yeah, against my better judgment,” he muttered.

Maybe so, but it was a step forward. It seemed like all they were doing was running from one crisis to the next. Now that this meeting was set up, though, the rest of the day loomed before them.

She needed to do something. To stay busy. Anything to keep from ruminating over the upcoming meeting with her ex-husband.

An idea struck, so she pulled out her disposable phone.

“What are you doing?” Steele asked.

“Calling my boss.” Without giving him time to protest, she quickly punched in the numbers and waited for someone to answer. Normally, that would be her job. But in her absence, the lawyers and paralegals would take turns.

“Gibson and Roberts,” a deep male voice answered. She was a little surprised to recognize Trent’s voice on the other end of the line.

“Trent, it’s Harper.”

“I tried to call on you the other day, but your voice mail box was full.” He almost sounded suspicious.

“Oh, yes, well, I lost my phone, remember? I gave you this number.” She didn’t like lying, but it was easier than explaining about the constant gunfire and tracking devices. Oh, and let’s not forget being framed for murder. If anyone had told her this would happen, she’d have laughed like crazy. Only she wasn’t laughing now. “Do you want to make a note of it again?”

“Yeah, yeah. I do remember now.” Trent was silent for a moment as he recorded the phone number, then asked, “How are you doing? Everything okay?”

“Sure. Listen, I’m sitting around with nothing to do. What do you think about letting me work from home for a day or two?” She saw Steele frown but ignored him, holding her breath and waiting for her boss to respond.

“Yeah, I guess we could do that,” he finally agreed. “But just for a day or two, Harper. I could use your help here in the office more so than working remotely.”

“I know, and I’m really sorry for the inconvenience.” It wasn’t her fault someone tried to kidnap her, but then again, it wasn’t Trent’s fault either. “I’ll use this time to get caught up on billing and other routine tasks. And if you need something specific, all you need to do is call. I’ll help out any way I can.”

“That would be great.” There was another pause, then Trent spoke again to someone in the background. “Yes, I’ll be right there. Have a seat.” Then he said to Harper, “I have to go. Doing more trial prep today.”

“That’s fine. Thanks, Trent.” She disconnected from the call.

“You should have talked to me about this plan of yours,” Steele said.

“Why? There’s nothing going on this afternoon, is there?” She crossed over to the table. “I’ll need to use the computer for a while.”
