I gasp, placing my hand over my heart. “You’d let me die?”

He gives me an exaggerated eye roll, puffing his chest out. “If you’re bitten, Cupcake, there’s no saving you.”

“You wouldn’t even try?” I ask, wanting to laugh but holding it in.

He points his finger down his body, giving me a little dance of the hips. “And risk all this? No. The earth will need to be repopulated once I’ve killed all the zombies. They’ll need good genes.”

At that, I burst out laughing, linking my arm through his. “At least I won’t feel guilty for letting you die now.”

He stops suddenly, and I nearly trip over my own feet. “You would let me die?”

I turn to him, smiling sweetly. “Well, of course. The world will need repopulating once I’ve killed all the zombies. Can’t let my good genes go to waste.”

“You two are so weird,” Cole rumbles.

“What he said,” Willow says, followed by a giggle.

“Don’t worry, we already planned for the two of you. If we’re in a situation where we’re surrounded by zombies, we’re going to sacrifice you both to get away.”

“Are you serious?” Cole mutters, while Willow glares.

I nod, because we did indeed discuss this before we left the bedroom this morning. “We are.”

“But we’re your best friends.” Willow eyes me warily, before groaning. “Oh, my God, you have me talking about zombies killing me, like this is going to happen in real life. I don’t even know why I feed your obsession.”

I giggle at her expression, just as another worker joins us.

“But we’d make such pretty babies,” I whisper.

“I’m so going to feed you to them now,” she hisses back.

CJ pops his head between us. “That’s treason. When we’re inside, you’re on your own, little one.”

She rolls her eyes before facing the bloke, listening to his instructions with rapt attention.

“You’ll be given body armour and a gun when we go through. The first course is the zombie apocalypse; there, you will have to kill the zombies to survive. Shots to the head, stomach, and back will take them out of the game. If you’re tagged, which they’ll be able to do by pressing various buttons on your gear, you are automatically out of the game and will be sent on to the next course. The next course is called Doom; inside that room is where you and the other members of your team are to team up to take out infected zombies. These zombies can only be killed with head shots. They are also sneakier and can shoot back. If you are tagged or shot, your body suit will vibrate, indicating to move on to the next level until that game is finished. The last level is called Survival; in there, you and your teammates will be against each other. There can only be one winner. Inside that room, you’ll be faced with death by zombies and humans. May the best warrior win.”

I feel Willow take a step back and I grin at her. She glares at me, moving closer to Cole.

“Does anyone have any questions?”

“Do you need the numbers of their next of kin?” CJ asks, pointing at the three of us.

The bloke chuckles, shaking his head. “Won’t be necessary. Come on, you can meet the other group playing with you today. Remember, when you’re in there, have fun. And girls, as hard as it is, try not to knee any of my workers in the nuts. They aren’t really going to hurt you.”

Willow and I turn to each other with wide eyes before looking back at him with raised eyebrows. “Why us? You should be saying that to these two. We can control ourselves, thank you very much.”

Cole scoffs. “You went all ninja over a spider web and kneed CJ in the nuts.”

I feel my face turn bright red. “There was a spider on there, I saw it. And in all fairness, I was startled when he touched me. I thought it was a spider and reacted. Badly.”

CJ winces next to me before facing the bloke. “Yeah, I’d tell them beforehand not to get within a few feet of them.”

I glare at CJ. “Hey! And you’re one to talk. You had a hissy fit over our waitress once, all because she had dark eyebrows.”

CJ takes a step back, his upper lip curling. “They looked like caterpillars on her fucking face. They were huge…and black. And excuse me for pointing out that God gave us two eyebrows.”

“CJ, you wiped at her eyebrows,” I state dryly.
