The man frowns. “Well, you could choose. And we could time it pretty close to your own cycle.”

“What if I want to be available for Sam only?” he asks, curious to know if this Dominant will tell him what Robert did.

The man rolls his eyes. “You don’t say? I swear he must have a magic fucking dick because you are not the first to ask to go on a list to ‘help’ him out if needed. I assure you, he is just fine. He gets more hole than anyone—”

“Hank, what’s going on?”

The man startles, a look of rage crossing his face, and then he hides it, pasting on a smile as he turns around to look at Robert, who’s just come into the room. It’s a relief to see him. And once again, Craig gets that wash of relief from the Dominant just being in the room with them.

Hank rolls his shoulders, and Craig wonders what Robert feels like to him. “We were going through options.”

Robert nods and leans against the door to listen. Craig is pretty sure this Dominant is onto Hank and what a jerk he is. “Don’t let me interrupt, carry on.”

Hank flushes red. “I think we were just finished.”

Screw that. “What about my request?”

“What request?” Hank asks. There’s so much hostility radiating from him that Craig leans back in his chair. The man’s dominance is unpleasant, prickling against Craig’s skin.

“If I want to be available for a particular Dominant only? Is that possible?”

“In that case, we ask the Dominant, and if he agrees, then your name goes into his medical and military file as someone to call in case of a designation emergency,” Hank says.

“I want to do that,” Craig says.

“Hank, can you get him the form to sign?” Robert asks.

Hank opens up his data pad and starts looking for the form. He holds it out for Craig to sign with his finger. He doesn’t seem happy about it.

“He’ll need a copy to take with him,” Robert says.

Hank gets to his feet and practically growls as he leaves the room to get the copy.

“Sorry about him. He’s close to his cycle, and everyone else is on vacation. I’m glad to officially hear Sam took care of you and you had a positive experience.”

“Sounds like everyone does,” Craig can’t help but say. “And it doesn’t matter if you’re short-staffed, he’s awful.”

Robert grimaces. “It’s not my call.” He clears his throat. “Anyway, about Sam. It’s true that Sam is one of the best Dominants for a submissive’s first time or to help them reintegrate, and he does have people who request him repeatedly, but that doesn’t mean he agrees. And he’s far more picky about who he allows to help him. I’d say that if you would like to offer to help him, and he says yes… well, the list isn’t as long as you’d think. I probably shouldn’t have even said that much, but I don’t want you to leave here feeling unhappy because Hank is an asshole. And I know for a fact that is the last thing Sam would want.”

Craig nods, a lump of emotion suddenly in his throat. “You’ve known him for a while, then?”

“Yeah, a few years now.”

He’s about to ask more questions when Hank comes back in with the form. He shoves it at Craig and escorts him out. Craig is happy to get away from him. Robert walks him to his new quarters. He’s got a “Reintegration into Civilian Life Class” schedule that will occupy the next few weeks.

“Thanks, Robert. It was nice to meet you.”

“You too, Craig. Just as a reminder, there’s a four-day cooling off period that Sam is mandated to abide by. And they’ll probably have him out on a mission ASAP. I expect he’ll be back in about a week.”

“Why do they do that?”

“Because bonded pairs are inconvenient for the military. Distance and time will make all of this easier. Most submissives get the blurring shot. If you’re struggling with his absence, you can go to medical, and they’ll give it to you.”

“Is that all they’d give me? A drug to make me forget?”

“Well, it’s the first line of treatment to help dissolve a bond. And if you have to go to medical, they’re going to assume that’s what has happened. You’ve started to bond to each other, and it’s interfering in your life, and they’ll do what they can to get you out of it.”

“I won’t go. I don’t want to forget what happened between us.”
