“Yeah, I’m ok. Just, uh -” I pause, and glance at myself in the mirror. Fuck, I’m a mess. “Can I call you back?”

“Alex just called me,” he says, and my heart drops. “Wanting to know what I did to make you so upset that you’d locked yourself in your room?”

Carla. Thatsnitch.

As quickly as I can without tossing Bex across the room, I stand and plow through my bedroom door until I’m at the entry to Carla’s room. She looks up from her perch, cross legged on her farmhouse-chic comforter, and tilts her head at me. Her eyes narrow when she sees my face, but I narrow mine right back.

“Fitz, I’m sorry Alex called you instead of talking to me first,” I say with a pointed look at my roommate. “Carla knows better than to tell people things without getting the full story first.” Her sheepish look down at her lap tells me she knows exactly what she did.

“You’re standing in her room about to yell at her, aren’t you?”

“Yep.”

“Call me later and fill me in?”

“Yep.” Before I’ve even hung up, I pick up a throw pillow from the chair next to me and throw it at her with as much force as I can muster. I miss, and it knocks over an empty water bottle on the floor. “Well, that’s par for the course this week.”

Chapter 37

Fitz

PIPER DELMONICO

Fuckkkk what kind of detergent do you use?

FITZ WESTFALL

Uh, I’m not sure. I have a laundry service. Why?

PIPER DELMONICO

Of course you do. I’m not sure, I’ve just been super itchy on my arms. Probably nothing - I’m allergic to dogs and it may just be my body getting used to Roscoe.

FITZ WESTFALL

You’re allergic to dogs and you have Bex?

PIPER DELMONICO

I found out I was allergic well after I had Bex. In the grand scheme of things, a little itch is worth it for her. Even if her gas does rival most of the Alamo’s team on a bad day.

“Whatatwatwaffle.”Ilook up from my desk to see Seer and my sister standing in the doorway - three days after our family dinner for Paula’s birthday, and I’d managed to all but avoid conversations about Piper with Frannie. I could tell that was where this conversation was headed the second they darkened my door.

“You know this is my office, right, not Fran’s?” I ask, setting down the stack of papers in my hands and looking at both women. Couldn’t be more opposite, but the way Seer sauntered over to my desk and sat down at the chair in front was eerily similar to the way my siblings did.

“I figured we’re besties and all, now. You know, since I charmed your girl.” She gives me a grin and picks up an expensive pen - a gift from one of our corporate partners, off the edge of my desk. I reach over and try to yank it back, but she rolls her eyes and puts it back down before I say anything. I adjust it back to where I had it. “But seriously. Piper’s friend sounds like a twatwaffle.”

I eye Seer, and then Frannie, who stands behind her friend, her purse over her shoulder, and shrugs at me. Clearly she’d shared what I’d told her on Monday, very briefly, about Alex’s call and the texts Piper had received after getting home.

“I don’t know that they’ve been friends for a long time,” I counter, gesturing between us, “just like we aren’t-"

“Ah ah ah.” Seer holds up a finger, cutting me off, and I sit back in my chair, crossing my arms. “I came here to further help your relationship with the girl who might as well be a fairy princess to your brooding villain. Or do you not want my assistance anymore?” I glare between Frannie and Seer, unsure of who I’m more irritated with, but give a resigned sigh.

“Lay it on me.” She grins, digging in her bag, just as ginormous as Piper’s, until she pulls out a pink velvet box the size of a sheet of paper with an elastic bow around it. When I eye them, Frannie tilts her chin up at it, her curtain of red hair shaking.

“We may have done some additional wrapping to help sweeten the deal,” she says casually, and I narrow my eyes, taking the box from Seer and sliding off the bow and top of the box.

Nestled inside is a laser-cut gold and white invitation, and when I fold it open, I stare up at the women in front of me.
