“Time to move,” Bridger decided, his mind already racing ahead to what this meant for their next move.

“Be careful,” Romero warned, his eyes meeting Bridger’s in a silent moment of understanding.

Bridger nodded once. “You, too. Never know who’s tracking whom.”

The man favored them with a last, wide grin. “I’m not dangerous enough to track anymore. It’s a good feeling. You need anything else, contact me through Eileen. She’s a special woman, that one.Romero wanted to be more than a colleague to Pegs, Bridger realized. The depth of the man’s emotions would have been evident even to people who didn’t have his people-reading skills.

“You might want to follow up on that,” he suggested. “She’s worth it.”

The man nodded solemnly. “I’m well aware, Captain. Well aware.”

Bridger gave the man a quick salute and guided Jane back out to the auditorium and into the casino proper. He kept his head on a swivel, his gun hand close to his holster, until they reached the shaded parking structure where their borrowed Camry awaited.

“Back to Pegs’ place?” Jane asked, her voice laced with worry.

“Only place we can go right now,” Bridger replied, his hand instinctively tightening on the car door handle.

Jane climbed inside and buckled her seatbelt. “Pete really got himself in trouble this time, didn’t he?”

“And you.” For which Bridger would never forgive the man.

Bridger plugged his phone into the dash. A message popped up instantly. A text from Pegasus.

Hostiles sighted in the area. Stay Away.

“Change of plans.”Bridger’s voice was ice cold in the shadows of the parking garage.

Jane couldn’t stop staring at the words on his phone, her mind blank. Was Pegasus okay? Where would they go now? She couldn’t think of anywhere to hide that couldn’t easily be traced back to her.

This spy stuff was so outside her wheelhouse. She knew how to choose the best paints for any surface, and when to use galvanized nails versus plain. And she could coax highlights and shadows out of almost any landscape with her camera. But all this running. Hiding. Chasing.

She lifted a prayer, thankful beyond measure that she had Bridger and his crew on her side.

Bridger tapped out a rhythm on the steering wheel. “We need a new safehouse. Now.”

Jane nodded mutely, pulse racing. The garage’s dim lighting cast his rugged features in shades of gray, accentuating the tension in his jaw.

He put the car in gear and pulled out of the garage. Jane white-knuckled the door handle, scanning the dark streets for any signs of a tail. All clear, for now.

Bridger’s phone lit up with another text.

Two of the agents who visited Jane sighted in town. No BOLO issued. You’ve got a lead, use it wisely.

He growled and punched the gas pedal, shooting the car down the Vegas strip.

He pointed at his phone. “Hit 1-1-9 and put it on speaker.”

“Tai here. Line secure.” Tai’s deep voice poured out the phone’s tiny speaker an instant after she hit send. “Mason and Kate are live, too. How’d it go with the magic man?”

“Tell you later,” Bridger said. “We’ve got a situation. Pegasus’s place has been compromised. We need a new safe house, ASAP.”

“I’ve got you covered.” Mason’s gravelly voice came over the line. “An old cabin, off the grid. Less than three hours from your location.”

“Look at you with the safehouses,” Tai teased. “Our little Eagle Scout is all grown up.”

“Can it, Kaholo,” Mason grumbled.
