“All parents wonder that at some point.”I resisted the urge to rub his back as he held his head in his hands over his knees.

“How does a twenty-year-old with no children of her own know so much about parenting?”

“Endless years of babysitting,” I chuckled.

We sat quietly for a few minutes before Mason’s head shot up and eyes peered toward Wyatt’s room.“I think he’s crying in there.”

I listened but heard nothing.“Are you sure that isn’t your liver crying from the whiskey?”

Mason stood and walked to Wyatt’s bedroom door, listening closely before opening it.“Hey, buddy, what’s wrong?”he asked as he walked in.It was then I heard Wyatt let out a sob.

Mason walked out of the bedroom with Wyatt in his arms and sat back down on the couch.Wyatt squinted in the light as he let out cries for his ‘mama.’

My heart broke for him.Cee hadn’t called, though Sergio did.It made me wonder what this woman thought was more important than calling her kid.If the drummer of the band could get away to call, why the hell couldn’t she?The night she had called, she was clearly on something.I didn’t mention it to Mason, and Wyatt didn’t seem to notice, but I did, and I was unimpressed.

“Sage advice here?”Mason pleaded.

“We could take him outside.Distract him until he’s so tired he collapses.”

“We can take him outside at night?”Mason questioned.

“As the parent, you make the rules. We can walk to the park, or just out to the common area. There’s a fence with a swing set and slide. He loves them.”

“Fwings?”Wyatt looked up at me hopefully.

“Would you like that, Wyatt?”Mason asked him.Wyatt nodded enthusiastically.

We bundled up and headed to the small play area outside.Wyatt went straight for the swings.I suggested Candace stay inside where it was warm, but Wyatt insisted she come with us.

As I pushed him on the swing, I got to know Candace.Maybe listening to her tell me about being twenty would remind my dick that she was off-limits.“So, what are you studying?”

“Huh?”She scrunched her face.

“In school?Your classes are online, I’m guessing?”

She giggled.“Um, no.I finished school already.Did a dual enrollment program while I was in high school and then graduated with my bachelor’s last spring.”

“Oh, wow.That’s amazing.”

“Not really,” she sighed.“I did it because my parents wanted me to.I don’t really care about a degree.”

“Online gamer, then?”I tried to guess.

She smiled and my dick took notice.“Nope.I’m writing a novel.”

“Even more impressive.What’s it about?”

I could see her cheeks redden despite the poor lighting.“It’s, um, it’s a romance novel.”

“Eleanor loves those,” I thought out loud.

“Do you miss her?”She slapped a hand over her mouth.“I’m so sorry. That was so personal. It was the whiskey asking, I swear.”

“It’s fine. She and I have been friends since we were babies.Other than deployments, I think this is the longest we’ve ever gone without seeing or talking to each other.”
