“I know that.I just—I wish I had been there.You know?I fucked it all up.”

“You’re here now.Not a lot of dads in your position would’ve taken on their own child full-time at the last minute to let their baby-mama heal from trauma.”

“She’s not a bad mom,” I told Candace.I wanted to reach out and touch her face.“She’s just going through a rough time.”

She shook her head in her hands.“Oh my god, I’m such a bitch. What did I just do?”

“Hey, it’s okay. We’ll clear it all up,” I rubbed a hand down her back.Touching her, even in this context, made my hand tingle.I wanted to put my hands and mouth all over her.

Of all the girls on this planet, you are falling for the nanny? How very cliche of you, Mason. And seriously, could you have worse timing?

My phone buzzed with a text.

Sergio:

Did she go back there?

No, she isn’t at the hotel?

Shit.Where the hell could she be?“Is that her?”Candace asked.“Tell her I’m so sorry.”

I shook my head.“No.It’s Sergio.He can’t find her.”

“You have to help him!God, I was so mean.If something happens to her, I’ll never forgive myself.I just thought—”

My phone rang.“Can you please explain to me why Catherine Roberts is crying at the gate to my house?”My father’s voice boomed.

Oh shit.“I’m on my way.”

“Get here fast before the Secret Service takes her into custody.”The call disconnected.

“I’ve got to go.”

“Is it Catherine? Is she okay?”Candace asked.

“She’s at my father’s, causing a national security incident,” I mumbled, standing to leave.“But she’s fine. And this isn’t your fault.”I twisted my fingers in a lock of her hair.Stop touching her.

Refocusing, I called Sergio.“I found her.I’ll be outside your hotel in five minutes.”

“Just tell me where she is.I’ll get her.The last person she needs right now is you,” Sergio barked.

I sighed in frustration.“You won’t get in to see her without me, so be ready in five.”

“Where is she?”

I pinched the bridge of my nose as I hopped into my car.“With my father.”

I flew to the hotel, knowing I was on borrowed time already. As soon as Sergio opened the passenger door to get in, I said, “So much for her not being a disaster.”

“She was fine until you called her a disaster.Just get me to her and I’ll take her back to the hotel.”

“She can’t keep doing this.”There had to be an end to Catherine’s unpredictable behavior.

“What do you want me to say, Mason? She’s been through some shit, and now she feels like your teenaged nanny is replacing her in her son’s life.”He wasn’t yelling, but he wasn’t quiet either.

He was right.“I know.I’m sorry about that.Seems Candace misunderstood the circumstances. She feels horrible.”I thought about her lying on her bed crying and my heart squeezed.

“I’m not the one you have to apologize to,” Sergio pointed out.
