“That didn’t bother me.I love Wyatt.And it’s not like he’s ninety.”

“He turned you down?Is that it?”

So fucking awkward.“Something like that.”

“You’re young. There will be other men.Don’t let this sully your outlook on relationships. And please, don’t use it as an excuse to go hooking up with that Derek fellow again.”

My mother had just used ‘hooking up’ in a sentence. No more social media for her.“Mom, I haven’t spoken to Derek in forever.”

“It wasn’t the talking I was concerned with.”She raised her eyebrow at me.Thunder rumbled outside.“See?God agrees.”

“I just need to figure out what’s next, you know?I thought I’d be working with them for at least another month, and I don’t have another job lined up.”My anxieties flowed from my head to my mouth.

“You could always intern for your mother.”She smiled brightly.

“Oh hell, no.If I’ve learned anything living with you, and then Mason, it’s that politics isn’t for me.”

“Probably a good thing he turned you down then,” she pointed out.

“I guess,” I muttered. If it meant actuallybeingwith him, I could make the political commitments as a partner.I’d watched my dad the last ten years. He stayed out of it unless mom asked him to make an appearance.I could handle that.Working for politicians every day? No.They are too dramatic.Everything is a crisis.

Pantsuits.

I think not.“Maybe I’ll just run away with a band like Mason’s ex-wife.”

“Is that where Eleanor snuck off to?Good for her. What’s the band’s name?I want to follow them on social media.”She pulled out her phone.

This woman.

Chapter30

Mason

Itried to focus on the white lines of the highway as I made my way west on I-90 toward Candace’s house. The rain was coming down in sheets hindering my ability to drive faster.“This is taking forever,” I whined to Elle over the Bluetooth.

“It’s been days.A few extra minutes won't make or break you.”

“Fuck. It’s been a week. Why did it take me so long to get back here?”

“Calm down. You needed to get your shit together.”

“I should’ve called her.Or texted. What if she won’t see me?”Taillights illuminated in front of me as I approached the Hopkinton line.“Damn it.Dead stop.”

“It’s Sunday evening in July.Everyone is coming home from their vacations.Just breathe,” Elle reasoned.“I told you to wait until tomorrow.”

“I need to be back in DC for work. We’re in session.Ugh!I should’ve come Friday night.”

“You needed to talk to your father.I’m so fucking proud of you.Have I mentioned that?”I could hear her smile.

“Me too, buddy,” Silas chimed in.

“Thanks. Can we focus? What if I show up and she isn’t there?Or just won’t let me in?”

“Grovel, Mason.I told you.You are going to grovel like it’s your fucking job,” Elle reminded me.“There’s one vote to win, and it’s hers.”

“Maybe she’ll take pity on you because of the rain?”Silas suggested.

“I need to go do my job.Let me know how it goes, okay?”Elle said.
