I lifted my head so I could look at him.“What do you mean it doesn’t count?”
“Eleanor, Catherine, and Michelle have all told me that if the first time is during sex or immediately before or after, it’s just hormones.”
Pondering the suggestion, I could see the logic, but it wasn’t the case here.“I would’ve said it hours ago, but I wanted to make you work for it.”
He chuckled.“I deserve that, but I’m still not believing you until you are fully clothed and away from this bed.”
“Fine.”I tried to sit up to put my clothes on, but he held me to his chest.
“Later, sugar.Right now, I need to hold you.It’s been so fucking long, and I want to stay this close.”
My body melted back into his.

Iwoke to a phone alert.Feeling around the side of the bed, I hoped to feel Mason there, but the bed was cold.I looked at the message.
Cee:
How often does Wy talk to Sergio on the phone?
most days.Is that not okay?
Bile rose in my throat.How had this not come up before now?Cee and I were finally on solid ground and now it felt like I’d fucked it up again.
I assumed he did it when he was with you as well
Cee tucked Wyatt in a lot when we were in the same city, but Wyatt’s call to Sergio was usually the last thing he did before falling asleep, and he was pretty insistent upon making all the calls himself.
Too nervous to keep texting, I called Cee.“Hey.I hope I wasn’t texting too early,” she answered.
“You’re freaking me out.Please tell me I didn’t fuck up.”
“It’s fine.I just didn’t realize the kid had a fan club,” she responded.
I laughed.“Yeah.He gets more phone calls than his father.”It was true.When Mason got Wyatt an iPad to use FaceTime to keep in touch with family, I thought it was a terrible idea, but he hardly uses it for anything else and loves feeling like he’s important.
“How have I not noticed?”Cee asked.
“Most of the time, it’s early in the morning or before bed.Serge calls most nights around seven, unless there’s a time zone issue and he needs to leave a video message,” I explained.
“What does that mean, leave a video message?”Her voice shook.
With a deep breath I responded, “I feel like I’m giving away secrets here.I really assumed you knew.”
“It’s fine.I guess I’ve just been lost in my head for a long time.”
“He calls him every night.Has for as long as I’ve been around.When he can’t talk in real time, he sends a goodnight video that Wyatt can watch before going to sleep,” I explained.
“Every night?”
I thought about it to make sure it was accurate.I didn’t want her to think I was hiding something or lying.“There have been very few exceptions.All of which he warned Wyatt about beforehand.”
