“Are you not coming with me?” I wound my arms around him.

“Wasn’t sure.” He looked at me for the answers, biting his lip.

“Eli, we’ve been sharing a bed since we were teenagers. Why on earth would we stop now?”

“Not every night,” he said, and I raised an eyebrow at him. “And things have changed.”

“Damn right they have. Now I get to make you sleep naked in my bed.” I looked him up and down, remembering what he looked like without his clothes. “Every night.”

“Well, eventually Wyatt will be able to escape his bed, and that will be a bad idea, but for now, I’m on board with this new arrangement.”

“People with kids sleep together all the time, Eli.”

I took Eli’s hand and pulled him to the bedroom, where we both stripped and crawled under the blankets together. “Every night?” he whispered, pushing hair behind my ear.

“I insist.”

“Are you sure this is what you want? Are we doing this?”

“How many more times are you going to ask?”

“We went from friends to fucking in under a second with very few words.”

I laughed. “Under a second? Elijah, this is the slowest burn ever.”

“You know what I mean. Yesterday, I was firmly in the friend zone. What happened?”

“I decided not to be afraid anymore. There isn’t much to say, Eli. You already know how I feel about you. Keeping you at arm’s length was hurting us both, so I just… jumped. I’m sorry if it was too blunt.”

He chuckled, “I should’ve known that if it ever happened, you’d just be all-in with no preamble.”

“Can we finish talking and skip to the sex?” I ran my hand down his arm and over his hip. Hunger lit up his eyes.

Now:

“Fucking finally,” Sergio said with a sigh.

“The end. Can you please stop harassing me about this now?”

“I may have follow-up questions later, but for now I’ve totally got a situation that needs taking care of.” He pointed at his crotch.

“Ugh, you’re such a pig.”

“You can’t say you didn’t know that was going to happen. It was the slowest fucking burn ever.”

The call came from an unknown number. I never answered such calls, but this time I did. “Hi, is this the wife of Elijah Jenkins?”

Um, wife? “I’m sorry. Who is this?”

“My name is Carol. I’m a nurse at UMass Hospital.” My stomach dropped. “I’m looking for the family of Elijah Jenkins.”
